Semen freezing is a procedure where sperm cells are frozen and preserved in a sperm bank for future usage. Normally under this technique, human sperm cells are thawed successfully for a long time. This process is also known as Sperm Cryopreservation, which is very beneficial for future use with the ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) services such as IUI (Intra-Uterine Treatment) and IVF (In-vitro Fertilization).

Semen freezing or sperm Cryopreservation is a delicate but scientific method, which requires maximum care and patience.

  1. Initial process of semen freezing is to find a reputed sperm bank to your nearby area.
  2. After that one needs to get tested for infectious diseases such as STD, HIV, HCV (for Hepatitis C), RPR (for Syphilis), which can affect sperm health.
  3. Once you are tested fit for semen freezing, semen sample is collected and sent to Laboratory.
  4. The collected sample is combined with special solution, which helps the sperm during freezing. After that the solution mixed sperm is placed in plastic vials and frozen in liquid nitrogen vapor. Once it gets the frozen state, the plastic vials are immersed in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of 371 degree Fahrenheit.
  5. Each frozen sperm gets their special Cryocode, which is required at the time of collecting the sperm back from the sperm bank.

Although semen freezing is one of the smartest approaches to preserve future fertility, however it may lead to following hazards (to the frozen sperm) at times.

  1. Unlike other body cells, sperm cells are hyper sensitive and are at risk of possible damage of thermal shock during the thawing process, which may lead to formation of intracellular and extracellular ice crystals- leaving the sperm unfit.
  2. Risk of cellular dehydration to sperm cells is also there during sperm freezing.
  3. Possible alteration to DNA integrity can happen with frozen sperms.
  4. The frozen sperm can damage the chromatin structure in sperm cells leading to risk of de-condensation. In simple words, frozen sperm not preserved well may sometimes result into reduced fertility.

Semen freezing or Sperm Cryopreservation allows a man to preserve his fertility. Unfortunately, life is unpredictable and semen freezing can help a coupledeal smartly with fertility. Some of the potential situations where one may need to opt for sperm freezing are-

  1. Men detected with cancer, which needs chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Semen freezing comes handy before going for such therapies, because it can help in preserving his natural fertility. Also, to churn out future risks of infertility due to pelvic cancer, one can opt for semen freezing.
  2. If you want to go for certain pelvic or testicular surgeries such as Frenulectomy (removal of Frenulum of the penis to correct frenulum breve), Vasectomy (A surgical procedure of permanent male sterilization) or Penectomy (surgical removal of penis);semen freezing is the best choice to opt for before you move ahead with these surgeries. These surgeries are known to affect your future fertility.
  3. A man can opt for semen freezing if he is in high-risk occupation (such as Military) or sports (likeKickboxing), which puts him at physical risk of infertility due to potential injuries.
  4. Men with busylife, which require them being away from home or family for a long time (i.e. Military professionals, Professional hikers, Corporate Executives) may opt for semen freezing so that they don’t miss the chance of being a father.
