    Patients Questions and Answers

Q1. Will my insurance cover infertility treatments in India?
    Posted on: Sept. 28, 2019, 1:02 p.m.
    • A. According to a study by a Bengaluru based medical technology company, about 27.5 million couples in India are suffering from infertility issues and are actively seeking children. The number of infertile couples in India is estimated to rise by more than 10 per cent by 2020. With the number of infertility cases rising in the country, health experts have pitched for an urgent need to include fertility treatments in health insurance plans to minimize financial risks of persons seeking help. According to the experts, fertility treatments are complex, hence, it needs a comprehensive insurance coverage. The cost of IVF procedure in India can come up to over 2 lakhs which can be financially challenging for many couples. Usually, the general health insurance policies in India do not cover for IVF procedures. Presently, both private and public health insurers do not include fertility procedures or treatments under their cover plans. However, there are a few health insurance policies that do. The only general health insurance policy that provides IVF cover and is available to women of different financial statuses is the BMB Nirbhaya scheme launched jointly by the Bhartiya Mahila Bank. With this cover, women can avail cashless facility and the maternity coverage for up to the first two children. Only maternity costs are covered by health policies as IVF treatment is considered a pregnancy-related issue and not an illness. Paying this hefty amount all at once, in the absence of adequate health insurance, is not a viable option for many. Hence, majority of infertile couples are compelled to stay away from fertility treatments. The only two health insurance policies that cover for IVF and similar kinds of fertility treatitments are One Health by Magma HDI Insurance and IVF Suraksha by Craft Hospital and Research Center. Key benefits of their infertility treatment insurance coverage in India include pre and post-hospitalization expenses, IVF treatment, free annual health checkups and more. IVF Suraksha by Craft Hospital and Research Center is one of the best IVF covers available for women since it uses state-of-the-art technologies for treatment. The policy also claims to give a full refund if the results of the treatment do not yield positive.

Q2. Can too much stress cause infertility?
    Posted on: Sept. 28, 2019, 6:30 p.m.
    • A. Stress can interfere with conception. If you are having a hard time getting pregnant you should stay calm and relaxed for a few days. Many studies have found a direct connection between the levels of the day-to-day stress of women and lowered the chances of pregnancy. Research has revealed, women whose saliva produce high levels of alpha-amylase, an enzyme that marks stress, took 29 longer to get pregnant compared to those who had fewer enzymes. At the same time, stressed women are known to have sex less often. Also, stressed women are more likely to smoke or drink too much alcohol or caffeine, which can drastically degrade fertility. If you are frazzled for a few weeks at work or feel anxious about a big move, it likely will not affect conception. On the other hand, if your stress continues for a long time or if you are dealing with major trauma, like a death in the family, then your ovulation might get irregular. Stress can affect the functioning of the hypothalamus, which is a gland in the brain that regulates your appetite and emotions, as well as the hormones that tell your ovaries to release eggs. If you are stressed out, you may ovulate later in your cycle or not at all. So if you are only having sex around day 14, thinking that you are about to ovulate, you may miss your opportunity to conceive. Of course, the effects of stress varies from woman to woman. In some women, even a trip out of town can delay ovulation. Others do not have any impact on their cycle even after a severely traumatic incident. If you are trying to get pregnant and you are under stress, your cervical fluid may give you a warning that something is wrong. Rather than noticing increasing cervical fluid wetness as you approach ovulation, you might find patches of wetness which continues with dry days. Your body tries to ovulate, but the stress continues to delay it. While stress may impact when you ovulate, it won't necessarily mean you cannot get pregnant. As long as you know how to identify when ovulation is about to occur, you still have good chances of conceiving.

Q3. How do we select a fertility doctor?
    Posted on: Sept. 28, 2019, 6:34 p.m.
    • A. Trust is an important factor when choosing a fertility doctor as you make complicated decisions that involve your health, your family and large amounts of money. Unfortunately, the field of infertility treatment has been misused by the well-publicized unethical, and even criminal behavior of a few doctors. To clear all your doubts and to know your doctor well, you can plan an initial visit. Make sure you know the experience and credentials of the doctor who will be treating you. Many patients rely on the recommendations of their primary Obstetrician and Gynecologist, with whom they already have a long relationship and others will depend on insurance companies and agencies to direct them. To find out if a doctor is a board-certified OB-GYN, reproductive endocrinologist, or urologist, you can also contact Elawoman. This organization can also help you find a specialist in your area. If the embryology lab of the hospital, it has been accredited by the Indian Medical Council, it has been inspected and has met industry laid standards for providing infertility treatment. Other than this, a compassionate and caring attitude and an ability to educate the patient in a sensitive manner are essential. Whether you use an internet search engine, or word of mouth, however, in the field of fertility, not all physicians and practices produce identical results. The degree of emotional support and the likelihood of a successful outcome may be vastly different depending on where one is treated.

Q4. I have swelling inside my vagina? what is the cause and treatment?
    Posted on: Sept. 28, 2019, 6:39 p.m.
    • A. If you have a feeling of swelling in the vagina you may have a swollen vulva. A swollen vulva is usually a symptom of vaginitis, which is an inflammation of the vagina. Vaginitis often the result of a bacterial, yeast, or viral infection or an imbalance in vaginal bacteria. Low levels of estrogen or certain skin disorders can also cause the condition to occur. When your vagina and vulva are both inflamed, it is known as vulvovaginitis. Apart from the swollen vulva, vaginitis can also lead to unusual vaginal discharge, itching, irritation, pain during sex, pain while peeing, light bleeding or spotting. Some of these symptoms go on its own while others may need treatment. It can be due to allergic reaction, frequent sex, yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, pregnancy, abscess or genital Crohn’s disease. If your condition is due to pregnancy or sex, the symptoms may subside after some time. If these symptoms last for more than a couple of days, you should see your doctor. They can figure out what’s causing your symptoms and develop a treatment plan suited to your needs. Your doctor may also recommend antiseptic cleansers and ointments to treat secondary infections or skin fissures. It is a cause of infection, you will be prescribed medications. To avoid swollen vulva you should practice good hygiene and avoid products on your genitals that might irritate. Do not douche or wear wet underwear as it might lead to infection.
