Donor sperm refers to sperm collected through sperm donation technique from a male sperm donor to help a childless couple through Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART). The sperms received from the sperm donor are artificially inseminated using techniques like IUI, IVF and ICSI. Usually the sperm banks or infertility clinics provide the facility of donor sperm or you can personally choose a sperm donor to provide you sperm according to your choice and availability.

Donor sperm is required when the male partner is facing infertility problems such as:

  1. Azoospermia- Under such condition, total absence of sperm in the semen is observed.
  2. Asthenozoospermia- In this situation, sperms lack the required motility and cannot travel to fallopian tubes to fertilize the egg for successful pregnancy.
  3. Cryptozoospermia- when the male counterpart has very few sperm cells present in his semen, with high casualty rates.
  4. Necrozoospermia- condition of dead and immobile sperms.
  5. Donor sperm is required if the male partner has gone through an episode of genital surgery (Penectomy, Vasectomy, Frenulectomy of penis etc) orgenital cancer.

In other cases, you need donor sperm if you are a single parent or same sex female couple, thosewho want to have a child.

Sperm may be donated privately to the purposeful recipient or to the sperm bank or infertility clinic. There are certain steps through which donor sperm is retrieved:

  • Selection of the donor- the person or the donor is chosen on the basis of his biological and psychological health and legal conditions (place of origin, background check) etc.
  • Retrieval of semen- the semen is received personally or in a fertility clinic/sperm bank through natural ejaculationby masturbation.
  • Sperm motility test-Sperm is further tested in the laboratory to see the potential - sperm count, motility etc.Sperm with motility of more than 45 % are chosen as donor sperm.
  • Sperm quantity test-Once the result is satisfactory the sperm (more than 30 million/ml) is declared as fit to use as donor sperm.
  1. Consultation with the potential recipients- The intended recipients of the donor sperm are consulted by the clinic or in some cases the recipients contact the clinic for donor sperm insemination through procedures like IVF (In-vitro fertilization), ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) or IUI. The identity of the donor is either disclosed or kept secret depending upon donor’s wish and based on the clinic/sperm bank’s protocol.
  2. Ovulation detection and stimulation- After Donor sperm is confirmed effective for insemination, the RE (Reproductive Endocrinologist) looks after various issues such as ovulation period or conditions of ovaries in the woman, who is supposed to be inseminated. If natural ovulation seems a problem then ovarian stimulation is done through fertility drugs (such as Clomid and Gonadotropin).
  3. Purification of the sperm - the semen is washed and the most purified fraction of the sperm with high count and mobility is prepared for insemination.
  4. Insemination- On the day of ovulation, the motile sperm is placed in the uterus of the woman through a catheter and passed through the cervix – as part of IUI.
  1. Misleading information regarding the donor- Normally at the time of sperm donation, misleading information about the biological and psychological features of the donor is created by many Fertility Centers. However, it’s hard to verify such claims and the couple should be weary about such nuances.
  2. Rejection of the sperm- sometimes, the recipient’s (woman) eggs and the donor’s sperm may not be compatible for fertilization due to thin uterine linings, hormonal levels or imbalanced environment for the sperm to stay alive. Under such situations risk of pregnancy rejection arevery common.
  3. Potential genetic defect- there is a chance of conceiving a genetically deformed child through donor sperm if the donor is inflicted with genetic problems.
  4. Risk of future contact- there is always an unsaid risk that the child conceived through donor sperm may at a certain point of life, try to connect with his/her biological father.

Prior health and genetic investigation of the donor (maybe through the clinic or laboratory) is of utmost importance. Other than that the points you should not ignore when going for donor sperm are as follows:

  1. Checking the reputation of the sperm bank or the clinic is important. You can consult with the previous recipients of donor sperm who got successful through the sperm bank/clinic if it does not violate the clinic/sperm bank’s protocol.
  2. If the donor is somebody you know and have selected, then do remember to discuss potential issues in the future (such aschild custody)do try setting up a legal contract in place.
  3. Racial origin and physical features of the donor are certain things you can prioritize when you look for donor sperm.
  4. Mental health of the donor should not be ignored at any cost.
  5. Personality traits such as IQ, hobbies and educational level of the Donor might be things that you can look into.
