Embryo freezing or Cryopreservation of embryo/s is a process through which embryo/s can be preserved for more than 10 years in below zero temperature for future fertility reasons. It is normally done as a component to IVF (In-vitro fertilization), which is normally done in cases of to hyper-ovulation and formation of excess embryos.

There are two different ways by which embryo freezing can take place- Vitrification and Slow Programmable Freezing (SPF).

  1. Vitrification refers to instant solidification of the embryo mixed with cryoprotectants, which reduces the risk of ice crystal formation in the thawed embryo/s. This is known as ultra-rapid freezing of embryos and is one of the popular embryo freezing method.
  2. Slow Programmable Freezing is a controlled rate freezing technique of embyo/s using cryoprotectants fluid at temperature down to 196 degree Celsius. The frozen embryo/s are then transferred into containers of liquid nitrogen and are kept for future use.

The ability to freeze and preserve embryos is undoubtedly one of the greatest achievement in the field of Assisted Reproductive Technology. Below are the benefits you can get for future pregnancy/s with embryo freezing

  1. Embryo freezing saves you the trouble with repeated egg retrieval and fertilization, each time you plan for an IVF cycle. Your ovarian reserve of eggs keeps depleting with age and also the egg quality keeps deteriorating. In such case, embryo freezing can help you once you get your extra eggs fertilized and can also freeze the excess embryos for future use.
  2. Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) cycles are less invasive than fresh IVF cycles. With Frozen embryos you save time and money, which is needed for, test sessions, monitoring visits, egg retrieval, and embryo culture with each new IVF cycle.
  3. Transfer of Frozen embryo is minimally invasive; as you do not need to go for surgery during egg retrieval and can also avoid potential ill effects of anaesthesia. FET cycles are performed through implanting the embryo in the uterine lining after injecting estrogen in the uterus lining.
  4. Frozen embryos help you curb the risk of ill effects of increasing progesterone levels on pregnancy. This may take place during ovarian hyper stimulation when some women experience elevated progesterone levels in their body which makes the uterine lining less receptive for the embryo transplantation. Embryo freezing can save you the hurdle because in FET cycles there are no stages of ovarian hyper stimulation.
  5. Frozen embryos are helpful as they can be tested for any genetic mutation or possess the risk of severe genetic disorders. This process is known as Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis where the embryologist can do a biopsy on the suitable embryo after a few days of their development.
  6. Embryo freezing is helpful if you want to start your family at a suitable time as per your convenience.

Success rates of frozen embryo transfer is usually higher as compared to fresh IVF embryo transplant because of the age increase in the couple from the time of last egg retrieval. Success of both frozen and fresh embryo depends on the maternal age of the mother at the time of embryo transfer. Women below the age of 35 years of age have 60 percent higher chances of getting pregnant with a frozen embryo. However, the success rate of pregnancy with frozen embryo keeps decreasing with rising maternal age and also with the length of freezing.

  1. Embryos may face risks of mild to serious damage in the process of thawing due to human or technical error.
  2. Frozen embryos face the risk of lethal ice formation during freezing which may put a danger in the survival of the embryos.
  3. Cases have been found of modified gene expression in the frozen embryos. The mutations formed may lead to growth of benign tumors in various organs of the baby.
  4. Babies born from frozen embryos are at higher risk of abnormal growth than those born normally in terms of psychomotor development, health and intelligence levels.
