Mechanism of Action- Iron preparations belong to a group of medicines called antianemics, and iron supplements
- Iron is essential for formation of hemoglobin (substance that carries oxygen and gives blood its red color) and myoglobin (muscle protein that provides oxygen to functioning muscles), and for the oxidative processes of tissues (to transport oxygen to various tissues) in our body
- It also supports functioning of several essential enzymes, neutrophils and plays important role in metabolism
DosageAdult -50 mg orally three times a day Child -2 to 4 mg/kg/day divided every 12 to 24 hours (maximum daily dose15 mg) Infants -1 to 2 mg/kg/day (maximum 15 mg) in 1 to 2 divided doses
Side EffectsPain in upper central abdomen Diarrhea and darky stool may occur Vomiting Urge to vomit Constipation Gastro-intestinal discomfort
Warnings/PrecautionsKeep this medication out of the reach of children. An accidental overdose of iron for a child can lead to death Do not take this medication if you have too much iron builds, iron overload disorder, hemolytic anemia Iron injection can cause severe and sometimes fatal allergic reactions or severely low blood pressure Tell your caregiver right away if you feel light-headed (like you might pass out), or if you suddenly have trouble breathing You should not receive iron injection if you are allergic to it, or if you have a type of anemia that is not caused by iron deficiency Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat Do not use iron injection if it has changed colors or has particles in it. Call your pharmacist for new medicine
