Uses

Used in the treatment of psychosis, depression, frequent persistent heart burn, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease Irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion (dyspepsia)


Mechanism of Action

It acts by inhibiting the receptor (D2 and D3) found in the brain and subsequently decreasing the level of chemical compound (dopamine) present in the brain


Dosage
Adult- The recommended dose is 25 mg 3 times/day

Side Effects
Absence of menstrual period, breast enlargement in male, spontaneous milk secretion, and changes in libido Neuroleptic malignant syndrome

Warnings/Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with history of neuroendocrine tumor, epilepsy, manic states, abnormally-high levels of prolactin in the blood, painful, lumpy breasts, heart disease, any allergy, during pregnancy and breastfeeding It may cause dizziness or drowsiness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication
Uses

Gastric acidity gastro-intestinal reflux disease (heart burn) stomach intestinal ulcers diseases associated with excessive acid production (Zollinger Ellison Syndrome)


Mechanism of Action
  • Rabeprazole belongs to class of medications called proton pump inhibitors
  • It blocks the activity of the proton pumps in the stomach wall that produce acid, thereby reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach

Dosage
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease; erosive oesophagitis -20 mg once daily in the morning for 4-8 weeks. Maintenance: 10-20 mg once daily For non-erosive oesophagitis -10 mg once daily for 4 week, upon symptom resolution, may continue with 10 mg once daily when needed Healing of Duodenal Ulcers -20 mg/day after the morning meal for 4 weeks; additional therapy may be required for some patients Zollinger-Ellison -60 mg once daily. Adjust according to patient’s needs

Warnings/Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with history of bleeding ulcer, such as black, tarry stools or vomit that looks like coffee grounds, or if you experience throat pain, chest pain, severe stomach pain, or trouble swallowing contact your doctor immediately May increase the risk of GI infections due to acid suppressive effects, liver damage, gastric tumor
