Mechanism of Action
Amikacin belongs to group of medicines called aminoglycosides. It works by interrupting bacterial protein synthesis, produces non-functional peptides, and inhibits the bacterial growth
Dosage
The recommended dose is 15mg/kg/day in 1-3 doses urinary tract infection 250mg twice a day.
Side Effects
Muscle weakness (due to blocking of signals from the nerves to the muscles) Hearing loss and loss of balance Reduced urine volume, protein in urine, increased serum creatinine, urinary casts, red and white blood cells in urine and high level of nitrogen waste in blood (azotemia) Decreased serum magnesium
Warnings/Precautions
Discontinue, if signs of ototoxicity, neurotoxicity or hypersensitivity occurs Monitor renal function before and during treatment Do not drive because you may feel sleepy or dizzy while being treated with amikacin
