Mechanism of Action

It kills the bacteria by interrupting the bacterial cell wall (outer coating of bacteria) formation due to which the bacterial cell wall is weakened and ruptured, thereby killing the bacteria


Dosage
Middle ear infection: Children - IM A single dose of 50 mg/kg (max, 1 gram) is recommended Meningitis in children: Children - IV: Recommended initial dose is 100 mg/kg (max, 4 gram), followed by 100 mg/kg/day (max, 4 gram/day) for 7 to 14 days Skin or Skin Structure Infections: Children - IV/IM: Recommended daily dosage is 50 to 75 mg/kg once a day or in equally divided doses twice daily (max, 2 gram/day) Surgical Prophylaxis: Adults - IV: 1 gram as a single dose 30 min to 2 hours before surgery Uncomplicated Gonococcal Infections: Adults - IM: 250 mg as single dose Miscellaneous Infections: Adults - IV: Usual adult daily dosage is 1 to 2 g once a day or in equally divided doses twice daily, depending on the type and severity of infection (max, 4 gram/day)

Side Effects
Dizziness, Headache Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting High concentration of eosinophils, platelet counts in the blood, decrease in white blood cells, low prothrombin levels, bleeding Increase in liver enzyme, elevated BUN (Blood urea, nitrogen) Indurations/tightness/warmth Vaginal inflammation Fatal ceftriaxone-calcium precipitates in lung and kidneys of neonates

Warnings/Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with history of penicillin allergy; severe renal impairment; pregnancy and lactation; problem with digestive system, especially colitis (inflammation of the large intestine), malnutrition (you do not eat or cannot digest the nutrients needed for good health), super infection Be sure for the full course of treatment. If you do not, the medicine may not clear up your infection completely
Uses

Sulbactam is used in combination with other antibiotics for treating certain bacterial infections It is used to treat intraabdominal, gynecological, skin or soft tissue, and surgal infections, especially those developed in the hospital


Mechanism of Action
  • Sulbactam belongs to group of medicines called betalactamase Inhibitor with very weak action against bacteria
  • Beta-lactamase inhibitors are available only in fixed combinations with specific penicillins (beta-lactam antibiotics) such as amoxicillin, ampicillin, piperacillin, and ticarcillin
  • It works by preventing destruction of beta-lactam antibiotics from chemicals released from bacteria and extends their spectrum of activity

Dosage
IntravenousGynaecological infections; Intra-abdominal infections; Skin and skin structure infections Adult:1.5 g (1 g ampicillin/0.5 g sulbactam) -3 g (2 g ampicillin/1 g sulbactam) every 6 hr. Max: 4 g sulbactam/day Child:≥1 yr: 300 mg/kg daily (200 mg ampicillin/100 mg sulbactam), given via IV infusion in equally divided doses every 6 hr. ≥40 kg: 1.5 g (1 g ampicillin/0.5 g sulbactam) -3 g (2 g ampicillin/1 g sulbactam) IM/IV every 6 hr. Max treatment duration: 14 days IntravenousAcute pelvic inflammatory disease Adult:3 g (2 g ampicillin/1 g sulbactam) every 6 hr with doxycycline. Discontinue IV therapy 24 hr after clinical improvement; continue with oral doxycycline (100 mg bid) for 14 days to complete treatment

Inflammation of a vein caused by a blood clot Rash Diarrhea Pain at site of injection

Warnings/Precautions
Please consult yourdoctor if you have diabetes and regularly check your urine for sugar level; ampicillin and sulbactam may cause false positive results Before start or continue the sulbactam and consult your doctor If you have asthma, runny nose due to allergy (hay fever), or kidney or gastrointestinal disease especially inflammation of large intestine (colitis), If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding or become pregnant while taking ampicillin and sulbactam
