Used orally for the treatment of high blood pressure, in combination with other anti-hypertensive drugs It is also used topically for treatment of hair loss (alopecia androgenetica) (hereditary hair loss) in men and women by preventing hair loss and promoting hair regrowth
Mechanism of Action
Minoxidil works by relaxing blood vessels of the body so that blood passes through them more easily. This helps to lower resistance to blood flow and thus lower blood pressure. Minoxidil stimulates hair growth in early and moderate stages of hereditary hair loss (alopecia androgenetica) by increasing the diameter of the hair shaft, stimulation and prolongation of growing phase of hair follicle (anagen). Being a peripheral vasodilator, minoxidil enhances microcirculation to hair follicles thereby stimulating the growth.
Dosage
Adult- The recommended initial dose is 5 mg/day as a single dose. Maximum: 100mg/day Child- The initial dosage is 0.2 mg/kg/day as a single dose
Side Effects
Most common- Fluid retention accompanied body weight gain, swelling, inflammation of heart muscles and fast heart rate Skin- Pigmentation, abnormal hair growth and allergic reaction Blood- Decrease in white blood cells and platelets Gastrointestinal- Nausea and vomiting Miscellaneous- Breast tenderness
Warnings/Precautions
Caution should be exercised in patients with history of heart disease, a heart attack, pheochromocytoma, or kidney disease, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding It may cause dizziness, lightheadedness or changes in vision, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication Avoid alcohol consumption
