Oocyte Donation or egg donation is a medical process through which fertile women donate several oocytes (ovarian eggs) to infertile women for assisted reproduction process (such as IVF or IUI) or for use in clinical research as part of biomedical engineering. Oocyte donation is a blessing for couples desiring a child with female infertility.

One might consider getting pregnant with donor eggs or oocytes if she has the following problems-

  1. Ovarian failure- some women go through premature ovarian failure, which causes very early menopause.
  2. Low ovarian reserve- when the patient is detected with reduced ovarian reserve or eggs with low quality.
  3. Genetically Transmitted Diseases- If you have a chance of transferring Genetically Transmitted Diseases such as Cystic fibrosis (breathing difficulty with severe liver, kidney and intestine issue), Marfran syndrome (connective tissue disorder where limbs i.e. hands, legs get extra-long), Hemochromatosis (accumulation of iron in the body), or Huntington’s disease (death of brain cells) to the child.
  4. Fertilization of the eggs: The collected eggs are mixed with the sperms from the partner or donor in clinical labs and kept and monitored for fertilization. The process of embryo development takes 2-5 days.
  5. Failure of IVF treatment- donor eggs or oocytes comes to rescue when you fail IVF treatment due to low quality of eggs or embryo.
  6. When you have a history of pregnancy failure or miscarriage due to reasons undetectable.

Oocyte donation is a two-phase medical procedure.

  1. Ovarian Hyper stimulation- Here the donor is given some follicle stimulating hormonal drugs (Gonadotropin i.e.), which induces the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs.
  2. Egg Retrieval- Once the egg production happens, eggs are retrieved from the donor with the help of transvaginal ultrasound aspiration. This is a straight forward and not at all a surgical procedure. Under this procedure, the surgeon or the RE(Reproductive Endocrinologist), uses a tube with suctioning needle into each ovary to retrieve mature eggs from the follicular fluid.
  1. Recipient’s menstrual cycle is synchronized with the donor cycle.
  2. Hormonal drugs (estrogen i.e.) are given to the recipient.
  3. Semen sample is received from the male partner.
  4. Semen is washed under clinical environment and most motile and healthy sperms are retrieved.
  5. Sperm of the male partner and egg from the donor are fertilized and the embryo is transferred through IVF in the receiving mother’s womb.

Based on the Fertility Center, you are usually provided with a list of oocyte donors. However, below are the factors you should remember when you are selecting an oocyte donor:

  1. The recipients should analyze the reputation of the egg bank or the clinic where the procedure will be completed.
  2. You can consult with the previous recipients of donor eggs who got successful through the egg bank/clinic. Make sure this does not violate the clinic or the egg bank’s protocol.
  3. If your donor is somebody you know personally, then do settle out future possible issues of child custody, using a healthy legal agreement.
  4. Women with hormonal problems such as high level of PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) have slightly lower chances of IVF success than women without such problems. However the percentage change is very minimal.
  5. Do make sure that the person has no history of birth defects or hereditary problems.
  6. Do make sure that the donor doesn't have any incidence of any Sexually Transmitted Disease.
  7. Personality traits such as IQ, hobbies and educational level of the Donor might be things you can consider. Also, physical and psychological screening of the donor helps in many cases.
  1. Risks of pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure and protein in urine)
  2. Risks of gestational diabetes (high blood sugar with increased urination, thirst, hunger and blurred vision during pregnancy).
  3. Risk of birth defects (autism, down syndrome etc.)
