Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), also known as artificial insemination is an ART technique used to help a woman conceive. IUI can be done in cases of male fertility, in absence of a male partner. During IUI, a woman may receive trigger shots (fertility medication) to release more than one egg. Sperms are washed which means that they are separated from the seminal fluid to clear debris and other male hormones that can cause cramping in uterus. In case, the male partner is infertile (sterile) previously washed donor sperms are used in the process. The doctor monitors the ovaries for ovulation to make sure the egg is present at the time of insemination. During the procedure, the woman lies down on an examination table. A speculum is inserted into vagina and then a catheter attached to a syringe filled with washed sperms, is inserted into the vagina and it releases the sperms once it gets inside uterus through cervix. The woman may continue to lie on her back for about ten minutes.moreless
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a comparatively low cost treatment meant for treating infertility in males and females. Success rate of IUI is dependent on a number of factors that can impact the outcome of the treatment like the lady’s age, the duration of time the couple is trying for a baby, and the cause of infertility. It can be concluded that the overall success rate of IUI can come in between 10% and 15% per attempt along with medication. The chances of success in an IUI cycle can increase with the number of attempts and this can go up till about 3 to 4 attempts but after the 4th attempt, the chances cannot be expected to grow any further. IUI works best if the duration of fertility is equal to or less than 3 to 4 years. The age of the woman undergoing the treatment is a deciding factor, if she is relatively of a younger age that is less than 34 years then the chances of success tend to increase. For women with PCOS chances are as high as 20% to 25%. IUI success rate can go up to 25% for those using donor sperm. IUI success might not be very good with cases of endometriosis, unknown or male factor infertility.moreless
