Cardiologist is the medical professional who treats cardiology problems. Cardiology diagnostic tests and procedures such as electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, chest x-rays, and computerized tomography are performed before starting with cardiac procedure. Cardiology surgeries are complex and require proper expertise of cardiologists.

What is cardiology?

Cardiology is a branch of internal medicine associated with study and the treatment of major heart and blood vessel disorders. Cardiology also includes medical diagnosis and treatment of valvular heart disease, coronary artery disease, congenital heart defects, heart failure and electrophysiology. Certain specific subspecialties of cardiology are cardiac electrophysiology, inventional cardiology, nuclear cardiology and echocardiography.

What is cardiovascular system?

It is an organ system in human body consisting of heart and blood vessels. Cardiovascular system is a part of large circulatory system which circulates blood and oxygen throughout the body.

How to become a Cardiologist?

Cardiologists are medical professionals who have taken their education in general medical and have opted for cardiology as a specialization. A Cardiologist is trained to identify and diagnose heart related diseases, rhythm disturbances, and heart failure. Apart from these, he/she is responsible to counsel and provide specialized heart and cardiovascular system care. Pediatric cardiologists are pediatricians who practice in cardiology. Physicians who specialize in cardiac surgery are called cardiothoracic surgeons or cardiac surgeons.Pediatric cardiologists

In any country across the world, one needs to complete a bachelor’s degree in medical science to opt for specialization in Cardiology. For example, in England, one needs to take Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) after completing bachelor’s degree either in biology, chemistry or cardiovascular technology. After clearing the MCAT, he/she can apply to a medical school for a four years specialization course in Cardiology (2 years coursework & medical training + 2 years of rotational medical practice). After this, 3 years of residency program 3 years of fellowship program in Cardiology is much needed to be a full-fledged cardiologist.

When to visit a Cardiologist?

You need to visit a cardiologist under following conditions such as-

1- If your family doctor recommends after diagnosing you for certain medical conditions.

2- When you suffer heart pain and chest burn for a prolonged time. When to visit cardiologist

3- If anyone has a cardiac issue in your family (i.e. parents), you should diagnose yourself to avoid future cardiac risks and consequences.

4- If your cholesterol level is high, a regular visit to a cardiologist is a must.

5- People with Diabetes and high blood pressure should visit a cardiologist for regular checkup.

6- If you have bad habits of consuming too much of alcohol and smoking, a regular visit to a cardiologist is a must.

7- Women with various difficulties in pregnancy such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes etc. should visit a cardiologist to avoid risks in pregnancy.

What are the tests recommended/performed by a Cardiologist?

After examining your medical conditions, a cardiologist may prescribe you one or some of the following tests for proper diagnosis of your cardiovascular troubles.

1- Electrocardiogram- Test measuring electrical activity of the heartbeat.

2- Chest X-Rays- Test to acquire information of your lungs and heart’s size and shape.

3- Echocardiogram- Ultrasoundmovie of the heart’s inside.Echocardiogram

4- Magnetic Resonance Imaging- Test through magnetic waves to take clear picture of heart and heart function measurement.

5- Computerized Tomography of Heart- Test through multiple X-Ray images to take clear picture of heart and lungs.

Is my Cardiologist a Cardiac Surgeon as well?

Normally, we use Cardiologist and Cardiac surgeon simultaneously. But a Cardiologist is not as same as Cardiac Surgeon. A Cardiac Surgeon is more than a Cardiologist and undertakes chest and heart surgery for any serious cardiovascular issue/s. In other case, a Cardiologist is specialized in diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular issues and does not necessarily performs surgery except heart catheterizations, inserting a pacemaker and angioplasty etc.

A study has shown that the licorice plant can help in improving overall heart health. And, if you are looking for a solution to all of your skin problems, then surely a dermatologist has all the answers.
