Gastric Problem is described as gastric pain, uneasiness and discomfort in stomach. Gastric Problems are caused by alcohol, spicy food, digestive trouble, stress and tension. Drinking ginger tea, aloe vera juice and performing yoga are some of the best home remedies to prevent gastric pain.

Gastric problems or issues related to the digestive tract are generally more common in individuals with diabetes and pregnant women. Gastric pain is sometimes called dyspepsia. Individuals with disorders affecting the internal organs, such as liver, pancreas, gall bladder, spleen, and gastrointestinal tract are higher prone to gastric discomfort and pain. Gastric pain is centered in the upper abdomen, and the pain can vary from a dull ache to severe, throbbing pain. Gastric problem is sometimes associated with symptoms such as vomiting, bloating or diarrhea. Gastric problem could signal more serious conditions that need attention or could indicate that you need a change in lifestyle. Gastric troubles can improve quickly with treatment. However, if the gastric problem is left untreated, it could lead to stomach ulcer and eventually stomach cancer. (1) (2)

In this article, we will look at:

    1. What causes Gastric problem?
    2. What are the symptoms of Gastric Problems?
    3. What are the best home remedies for Gastric Problems?
    4. What steps should be taken to prevent Gastric Problems?

    1. What causes Gastric problem?

The gastric problem can occur because of the following reasons (3) (4):

    • Consumption of spicy or fatty food
    • Eating too fast
    • Inadequate fluid intake
    • Peptic ulcer
    • Smoking and alcohol consumption
    • Stress
    • Use of drugs such as aspirin, corticosteroids, beta-blockers, etc.
    • Medical conditions affecting the stomach, intestine, and other abdominal organs

    2. What are the Symptoms of Gastric problems

A person may experience the following signs and symptoms as an indicator of gastric problems (5):

    • Nausea or recurrent upset stomach
    • Inflammation
    • Abdominal bloating or abdomen pain
    • Vomiting and indigestion
    • Burning or gnawing feeling in the stomach between meals or at night
    • Hiccups and loss of appetite
    • Coating on tongue
    • Regular pain in the stomach
    • Passing of gas that may be mild or excessive
    • Diarrhea and heartburn

    3. What are the Best Home Remedies for Gastric problems

Here are the five best home remedies for the gastric problem that work without fail (6):

    1. Fresh ginger: One of the best home remedies is to grate about one teaspoon of fresh ginger and have it with one teaspoon of lime juice after every meal. Ginger acts as a natural agent that relieves flatulence. Small doses of ginger may relieve gastrointestinal irritation. Ginger can reduce the likelihood of stomach acid flowing up into the esophagus thereby relieving symptoms of acid reflux. Ginger is also known to reduce inflammation. (7)

    2. Triphala: Herbal powder Triphala is also another helpful home remedy in dealing with gastric problems. Put half teaspoon of it in boiling water for 5 to10 minutes and then drink it before going to bed. Triphala is popular for its use as a gentle bowel tonic, being helpful indigestion, bloating and supporting regular bowel movements. Triphala is also a powerful antioxidant, protecting cells from the damaging effects of free radicals. Triphala has been regarded as the safest laxative for relieving constipation, cleaning the colon, preventing ulcer, inflammation and toning the gastrointestinal tract. Triphala has the ability to rejuvenate the body, strengthen organs, particularly, the organs of the gastrointestinal system. (8)

    3. Jeera Water: Drinking jeera water is one of the best home remedies for gastric problem. Jeera contains essential oils that stimulate the salivary glands, which help in better digestion of food, reduces inflammation and prevents the formation of excess carbon dioxide. Jeera is rich in anti-inflammatory antioxidants; it is also known to be antibacterial and antiseptic. It can solve a host of tummy woes, fortify digestive tract, and relieve nausea, bloating and constipation. Cumin acts as a painkiller and is especially beneficial in curing stomach ulcer, stomach pain, and abdominal pain. Jeera water generally stimulates the secretion of digestive enzymes and accelerates the digestion process, thus helping you fight gut issues. (9)

    4. Yoga: Performing yoga daily at home helps in stimulating the abdominal organs. Yogic poses massage and tone the abdomen; this is great therapy for gas, bloating and constipation. Yoga is one of the most efficient and the best home remedies natural for acidity, inflammation, gastric ulcer, and gastric pain. It is also one of the easiest and quickest ways to not only overcome the effects of acid reflux but also helps strengthen the digestive system. (10)

    5. Aloe Vera Juice: The benefits of aloe vera for the skin are widely known but not many people are aware of the fact that aloe vera juice is a great home remedy for treating gastric pain. Aloe vera is thought to be useful for treating some of the symptoms associated with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) such as constipation and diarrhea. The anti-inflammatory properties of Aloe vera may help to reduce gastrointestinal inflammation, improve digestive system and bloating which can contribute towards IBS symptoms. Aloe vera is one of the best home remedies especially for people suffering from ulcerative colitis. Aloe vera juice can give relief when heartburn attacks. The compounds present in aloe vera juice help control secretion of acid in the stomach. The effects have even been shown to combat gastric ulcers and prevent them from getting larger. (11)

    6. Papaya: One of the beneficial effects of papaya is relief from gas. Papaya is not only rich in anti-oxidants but also papain, an enzyme that aids the digestion of dietary proteins and prevents the formation of excessive gas in the stomach. This popular fruit is rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, and amino acids. Papaya has high water content; it helps in digestion and keeps the body hydrated. It neutralizes the acid in the stomach, improves the digestive system and reduces acid reflux. (12)

    Remedies for Gastric Problems

    4. What steps should be taken to Prevent Gastric Problems

Whether gastric pain is diagnosed as non-ulcer dyspepsia or occurs due to a more specific cause, making some simple lifestyle changes can lower the risk of experiencing gastric pain symptoms. Here are some useful tips one can follow to prevent gastric problems:

    • Eat smaller but frequent meals. If a patient often suffers from indigestion, have five to six smaller meals a day, rather than three square meals.
    • Eat on time and avoid skipping meals. This will accustom the stomach to release its gastric juices only during at mealtimes and not erratically.
    • Consume less irritating foods. Cutting down on spicy, acidic, fried or fatty foods helps to reduce gastric symptoms along with improving the digestive system and allowing the stomach to heal.
    • Drink alcohol in moderation. Excessive amounts of alcohol can weaken the stomach’s protective lining, making one more susceptible to ulcers.
    • Quit smoking. Smoking increases the production of stomach acid, slows down healing and increases the risk of getting stomach cancer.
    • Stress management. High stress increases the production of gastric juices in the stomach. Exercise regularly and adopt relaxation activities such as yoga to keep stress in check.
    • Sleep 8 hours every day. An erratic sleep cycle could worsen many gastric disorders like GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Sleep deprivation also causes basic digestive system like processing and eliminating the food from the body to slow down.
    • Switch diet cokes with coconut water. Consumption of aerated beverages may cause sharp pain, bloating and cramps. Consider switching to healthier alternatives like buttermilk, lemonade or freshly squeezed juices. Aerated drinks are carbonated that increases the amount of gas present in the digestive tracts. This creates chaos with the natural ph balance of gases in the digestive system and could cause gastric pain.

What Steps Should Be Taken to Prevent Gastric Problems

    Post-Treatment Guidelines

Post-treatment guidelines for gastric trouble include taking medication as prescribed by the doctor on a regular basis and on time. One needs to exercise regularly but make sure to avoid exercises that are of a high-impact nature. Make sure to maintain a healthy diet and avoid alcohol, greasy or fried foods, spicy foods, carbonated drinks, and other citrus fruits or their juices. Drinking plenty of water, keeping one hydrated and other oral hydration solutions are the best way to prevent the gastric problem.

Gastric pain is a normal condition and it happens to most of us but if one suffers from it regularly, it could be a sign of a serious disorder in the digestive system like lactose intolerance, bowel obstruction or hormonal imbalance. It is always good to resort to natural solutions rather than popping pills but if the problem persists do not ignore fixing up an appointment with a doctor. With proper treatment and a healthy lifestyle, gastric problems can be cured permanently. However, one must remember that going back to an unhealthy diet and lifestyle can bring back the same problems. For more information on health tips follow Elawomanblog.
