How to Prepare Yourself For Surrogacy

In addition to legal compliance, mental and emotional preparation is the basic first step that you take as a couple while preparing for surrogacy. After opting for surrogacy, taking care of financial facet also becomes vital. You need to hire an agency and also get your stress management sorted.

Surrogacy calls for many steps for the intended parents and the surrogate too. The intended parents have to prepare themselves as far as the surrogacy is concerned. According to ancient Indian philosophy, propagation is the ultimate purpose of any species; therefore, the birth of a child is always dependent on the factors that lead to high survival chances of the offspring. Surrogacy means nurturing the fertilized egg of another couple into the womb of a surrogate and the surrogate receives financial rewards for the relinquishment of the child for altruistic reasons. (1)

Let’s Discuss in More Detail About How Should Parents Prepare for Surrogacy Babies:

Below are some steps outlined in order to make your surrogacy process a successful one.

    1. Initial Consultation with a Doctor

Schedule a consultation or meeting with the physician with a purpose to review options, such as the detailed process of matching your needs with a perfect surrogate, legal implications, insurance details, surrogacy costs, and other medical information. Your every step should be a calculated one with proper consultation with the fertility doctor. No decision should be taken without proper discussion and advice from the doctor. Their approval is absolutely a must before taking any medication as they may have serious side effects. So make sure that you have had the necessary checkups done before starting with it.

    2. Matching A Surrogate

After the initial consultation with the fertility expert, the reproductive viability and potential of the surrogate is assessed to help you choose a viable candidate. Fertility centres can be your liaison with the surrogacy agencies in helping find a suitable candidate. Surrogates need to submit their full-fledged records of medical history and pregnancy to be reviewed by an infertility specialist. The surrogates are also required to submit certain documentation in order to match the intended parents need. (2) Three key requirements used to connect a surrogate and intended parent(s) are legal fit, personality fit, and views on selective reduction.

    3. Emotional Preparation

Intended parents have to emotionally prepare themselves with the fact that another woman or surrogate mother will be carrying and delivering their baby. They have to build a healthy relationship with the surrogate and will have to provide her with all the amenities. Make sure that she qualifies in all the screening aspects and is healthy to carry your baby for the nine months. Of course, the legal contracts will be involved too. The surrogates require assessment and counseling as there are possible chances of psychological and emotional complications based on attachment to a living creature for a surrogate mother. Emotional counseling is needed for the surrogate as relinquishing the child to the intended can prove to be a cause of emotional distress on the host woman or rented mother. (3)

    4. Physical Preparation

After all documentation has been collected, an IVF procedure is performed. Gametes are taken from both or at least from one intended parent to allow fertilization to take place in a test tube. After a certain period of time, the most viable embryos are secreted and are implanted into the uterus of a surrogate mother. To increase the probability of successful embryo implantation, usually, two embryos are transplanted at once. (4) If the couple is infertile and is not producing enough eggs or sperms, then they have to follow a diet plan and a course of medicines to enhance sperm and the egg count. Make a chart of your ovulation days and sterile days. There might be chances that the egg count is less. Men can be infertile too and to treat infertility they also have to take some injections like HGH (Human Growth Hormone). HGH increases your testosterone level, which in turn increases sperm count. For women, HCG (Human chorionic gonadotropin), hormone is used to cause ovulation. Before going for these options, you should consult the doctor. So make yourself ready for upcoming treatment.

    5. Stay Connected

It may, at some point become a necessity to educate your near and dear ones about surrogacy as a medical technology as it may not be seen under the same light by one and all. Based on an interview, the reactions of friends and family in a majority of cases (n = 25; 74%) responded positively, eight (24%) responded neutrally or had mixed responses, and only one friend responded negatively. (5) When it came to the response of families, especially the husbands of the surrogate mothers responded positively when first told about surrogacy. In Delhi, 28 percent of the husbands of surrogate mothers feel ambivalent but in Mumbai only 2 percent of husbands have felt so. (6)

    6. Stress Management

A study in a journal showed that women who had been a surrogate were interviewed and showed an impact of mental stress related to psychological well being, physical health and well-being of surrogate’s families and children. (7) Remember that along with the surrogate mother, you are also a part of the process and your bodies too will bear the impact of medications and specific processes of stimulation of ovaries, trigger shots and egg retrieval. You need to try your best to avoid stress at all costs. Following are the ways that can help you beat the stress:

    • Have positive thoughts about your choice
    • Develop habits that make you feel good about yourself
    • Spend quality time with one another
    • Keep yourself well-informed of the processes to come

    7. Stay Legally Compliant

In order to avoid legal hassles between the intended parents and the surrogate, a surrogacy contract is signed between the parties. A report said that there are as such no fixed regulations connected to the cost of surrogacy in India or compensation received by the surrogate mother in lieu of relinquishment of the surrogate baby. The guidelines of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) showed that maximum of three IVF attempts are allowed for a surrogate mother to get pregnant for a particular intended parent. (8)

    8. Financial Preparation

Another important part that demands attention and thorough planning is finance. Surrogacy treatment cost is inclusive of medical, counseling and legal costs, and it is inexorably expensive. You will need to pay for appointments with fertility specialists, counseling, legal advice, and the cost of the treatment, as well as certain other agreed reimbursements for the surrogate. Clinic fees may vary from one clinic to another depending on the clinic used, procedure required, whether a donor is needed and how many IVF attempts are undertaken. (9) You should have proper knowledge about the expenses that you will have to bear throughout the nine months of pregnancy. The intended parents are expected to provide complete care, medications, and compensation to the surrogate mother and this is in addition to the IVF treatment and medications associated with it. In case you have financial constraints, getting a medical loan can also be a viable option.

I think emotional preparation is more important than physical preparation in case of any treatment. For surrogacy also being emotionally able to see your child being born by another woman is difficult for some women.

Even if you are going for surrogacy, then also the intended mother has to be prepared for the egg retrieval process. I myself have the experience of this, so I can say that there are a lot of preparations which one needs to be done.

For my sister surrogacy proved to be the best and successful option. She now has a cute girl with the help of surrogacy. She didn't face any problems in the treatment. Her baby is now four years old.

Financial preparation is very important in the case of surrogacy, as it is really an expensive process. Medical loans will be helpful.

Surrogacy is really an expensive treatment. One will go for surrogacy after they have tried every other option and didn't get any success. However, it is true that the success rate of surrogacy is also very high. In these case intended parents should be prepared very well that they don't feel any d…
