If you are thinking that how to do to get pregnant, then you need to follow certain effective tips for successful pregnancy. Keep a check over your diet and maintain your weight. Limit caffeine. Maintain hygiene and avoid self medications. You can improve your chances with these tips for successful pregnancy.

Are you planning to get pregnant? For a woman who wants to get pregnant, the most important thing to keep in mind is to take good care of her body. There are plenty of things women can do to improve their odds of having a baby. A woman should know her body well, specifically tracking her menstrual cycle. In order to prepare the body for a healthy pregnancy, there are some things a woman should do like visiting her doctor, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and keep a track of her reproductive health through regular testing. (2) Here are the steps you can follow to help your body prepare for a healthy pregnancy. (1)

    Visit a Doctor

Before you step onto the path of conceiving, you should consult a doctor. A woman's body can be subjective to many symptoms, so it is necessary to find out which stage you are at in terms of conception. If a woman is trying to get pregnant, it is important to keep a track of the menstrual cycle and know some pregnancy tips and signs of pregnancy. Consulting a doctor or a timely checkup can help avoid many uncertainties during pregnancy. (3)

Tell the doctor if you are dependent on any medications and ask them questions. A pre-pregnancy checkup makes sure:

    • Vaccinations are up-to-date
    • Keeps a check for STDs ( Sexually transmitted disease)
    • Keeps a check on health issues like high blood pressure and cholesterol
    • Keeps a check on chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes and thyroid problems
    • Help ensure that the partner has no chronic conditions
    • Checks whether medications may affect sperm count or cause other fertility problems

Consulting a doctor is a good start for those women who are planning to get pregnant, especially for those who have health issues like diabetes, epilepsy or mental health issues.

    Watch Your Diet

It is very important to maintain a balanced diet when trying to conceive. One should always pay extra attention to the do’s and don'ts when it comes to a pre-pregnancy diet(4) Diet before and during pregnancy can affect the baby’s development in the womb and its health in the future. Try to include lots of vitamins, proteins, fruit juice, fruits, green leafy vegetables, calcium-rich food, unsaturated fats, and whole grains. Stay away from alcohol, smoking and reduce caffeine intake as much as possible. Visit the doctor and get hands-on advice on what to eat and what to avoid. A woman can improve her fertility by eating a healthy, balanced diet. Consultation with a dietitian is required for those who have a condition such as diabetes that requires specific diets and nutritional requirements.

    getting pregnant, pregnancy tips

    Quit Smoking

Smoking can give rise to a number of health conditions and it can affect the fertility in both men and women. Tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, of which at least 250 harmful chemicals are present in tobacco smoke along with 69 other chemicals that can cause cancer. (5) They contain hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide and ammonia all of which are extremely harmful. Smoking can reduce a woman's chances of conceiving, it can also damage the DNA of a baby. According to the ASRM (American Society for Reproductive Medicine), it has been found that it takes longer for a woman to conceive if she smokes because it makes a woman's eggs more prone to genetic abnormalities and increases risk of miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy. In fact, female smokers who have IVF (In vitro Fertilization) have to attempt more than two times as compared to nonsmoking women in order to conceive. In addition, it has been found that men who smoke cigarettes have a lower sperm count, motility and more sperm abnormalities.

    Maintaining a Healthy Weight

A woman’s weight and BMI also plays a very important role in determining her fertility. Pregnancy gives lots of strain to a woman’s body, so it is important to maintain a healthy weight before pregnancy to prevent exertion. (6)

Exercise and staying active can help to improve mood, energy levels, reduces stress. If a woman has a high BMI, it can reduce fertility and increases the risk of complications in pregnancy. Bringing down the BMI can make a big difference, however, if BMI is in the underweight range this can also affect pregnancy. A woman with a low BMI or a very high BMI can have the following symptoms:

    • Irregular or missed periods
    • Underweight can stop ovulating altogether
    • Gestational diabetes
    • Pre-eclampsia
    • Birth defects
    • Need for a c-section

Eating the right food, drinking water, and regular exercise is the key to a healthy pregnancy.

    ovulation, sign of pregnancy

    Limit Caffeine

Cut back your caffeine intake because too much caffeine intake can trigger and increase the risk of miscarriage. One can also stay away from other common sources of caffeine, like diet coke, soda, tea, energy drinks, and even certain pain relief medications. Too much caffeine in pregnancy can cause the following complications: (7)

    • Harmful to the developing baby ( baby weight)
    • Fertility problems in future baby planning
    • Lesser chances of conceiving in the future
    • Increases the gestation period
    • Frequent urination because of dehydration
    • Disturbance in sleep
    • Increase in blood pressure
    • Increased heart rate
    • Preterm birth risk

Caffeine is extremely unhealthy, especially if a woman is trying to conceive. A pregnant woman should try to drink less coffee even after delivery because the baby's body cannot metabolize caffeine at such a young age, which is related to breastfeeding.

    Avoid Infections

Stay clean and stay away from an environment, (8) which can cause infections when you are trying to get pregnant. Avoid junk food such as unpasteurized soft cheeses and other dairy products, cold and raw foods, under-cooked fish and poultry. These foods can cause foodborne illness because they can harbor dangerous bacteria that cause listeriosis leading to miscarriage or stillbirth. One should also avoid uncovered food and unpasteurized juices because they can contain bacteria such as salmonella or E. coli. Make sure you wash your hands with soap when preparing meals, after going to the toilet and keep clean especially the genital area. Wear gloves whenever required, for example, gardening, emptying the trash can, cleaning the toilet, etc.

    Avoid Painkillers

Taking painkillers to relieve body pain is not always the best solution. Painkillers can cause a serious health problem later and are dangerous for the baby. Try to avoid painkillers, if pain persists consult the doctor. (9)

While the idea of getting pregnant is fulfilling and exciting, with it comes to a range of responsibilities. Therefore, it is important to make your plans carefully before you take the plunge. (10)
