Fun indoor games for kids can lift up the mood of children. Fun games like I spy, touch and feel, bubbles are usually for kids under four years of age. Kids between five to eight years of age like indoor games like simon says, obstacle course, musical chairs and hide and seek.

    Indoors Games for Kids

During a rainy day, kids become restless and the only thing they can do is play indoor games. However, kids get bored playing the same games every time. They need new interactive and educational games that can develop their IQ and problem-solving skills. This list is categorized into age-appropriate groups, but as always, these fun indoor games for kids can truly be enjoyed by anyone who is ready and willing to have fun.

In this article, we will look at:

    1. What are the best indoor games for kids?
    2. What indoor activities can an eight year old play?
    3. How to play I Spy?
    4. How to play duck, duck, and goose?

    1. What Are the Best Indoor Games for Kids?

Fun Indoor Games for Kids Ages 2-4

    1. Balance Beam

This is easier to set up than you might think. Get a color tape and tape down a line of any length in the middle of the room. The challenge for your child is to walk on the line all the way to end without any foot stepping out of the line. You can tape down different shapes and angles to make the game more interesting and difficult. You can add your own variations to this game such as fastest child without stepping off, walking it heel-to-toe, walking it backward, with eyes closed and more.

    2. Touch-and-Feel

This is a great way to teach young kids to get to know the surrounding through the sense of touch. It helps children get their mind to associate information to something other than just the way they see. The idea is to put interesting objects into containers that a child must reach into and identify the object just by touch. Shoeboxes, packaging boxes are perfect as a container as they can easily fit toys and small objects. Kids can also paint, color or draw on the boxes to make it more interesting. Kids can ask questions and offer clues as the task gets difficult.

    3. Sorting

For younger kids, sorting things can be the easiest way to start. In this fun indoor game for kids, you just need a few same shaped objects in different colors or materials. Give all the objects to the child and ask him to sort it. You can make the game more difficult by asking to sort according to the texture or smell. For sorting bins, you can use masking tape to create a boundary.

    4. Bubbles

For this game, simply get a plate and straw for each child and put some dish soap on the plate. Create foam by mixing it with water and use the straw to blow on the soap to create bubbles. The one who has the biggest bubble wins. The number of bubbles the child makes or the bubble that lasts the longest can also decide the game.

    5. Keep the Balloon Up

This is a little rambunctious game but kids enjoy playing it a lot. Simply blow up some balloons and tell the kids to keep the balloons from touching the floor. This game is more suitable in a big room as children might break something trying to lift the balloons up. Kids can also pass the ball with each other like volleyball.

    Balance Beam

    2. What Indoor Activities Can an Eight Year Old Play?

Fun Indoor Games for Kids Ages 5-8

    1. Simon Says

This indoor game is best for kids aged between five to eight years of age. In this game, a kid is chosen to command the other kids. Next, all the kids should do whatever when starting a command with “Simon Says”, for instance, “Simon says sit down”. Whoever fails to follow the command, they are out of the game. To make the game more difficult, kids can issue commands faster and faster. Kids can also play Simon Says with commands to draw or color something.

    2. Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt is all about finding items, which are hidden, inside the house. First, find some objects around the house that you want your kids to find. Toys are a good object to hide, as children are most familiar with them. You can write down the list of objects you have hidden and ask kids to find them. The one who finds the most or found all in the least amount time will win the game. You can hide them in difficult spots to increase the difficulty level.

    3. Hot Potato

This game is like one-touch game in football. Simply get any softball or rolled up socks and toss it to a child. Instruct them to toss it to someone else as quickly as possible. Each child passes the ball to the next child. The one who lets the ball fall or holds the ball the longest will be out of the game.

    4. Hide and Seek

We have all played hide and seek, so we know how exciting it can be. You just need to hide in the most unfamiliar places and enjoy the struggle of the seeker.

    5. Animal Charades

Before starting the game, print out or cut out individual animal pictures. Fold each in half, and put them in a basket. Start the game by asking the first child to choose a piece of paper. The child then needs to act out the animal without making a sound. All other children must try to guess what animal is being portrayed. The one who correctly guesses the animal gets a point and another child will pick the paper once again.

    6. Indoor Obstacle Course

This game is best for indoor physical activity as kids get to crawl, jump, walk and balance through the obstacle course. Here are some ideas for the course that you can be included.

    • Put down pillows or couch cushions and tell the kids to jump from one to the next.
    • Stools and ottomans also make a good obstacle if you ask them to climb over.
    • Allow only jumping, crawling, crabbing and walking from one area of the course to another.
    • Lay a length of colored tape on the floor as a balance beam.
    • Make tunnels using blankets and bed sheets over a table.
    • Allow them to climb over sofas and beds to make it more enjoyable for kids.

    7. Musical Chairs

Even grown-ups enjoy this game during family gatherings and house parties. Musical chairs game is best with at least 4 or more children playing and 1 additional person to stop the music.

    8. Rock, Paper, Scissors

I always love using this game to settle something when I don’t have a coin to flip. Check out this video on how to play rock, paper, scissors:

These fun indoor games for kids will definitely cheer up your kids. It will not only help your child to pass time but also improve their problem-solving skills and make them smarter. So, next time, when you see your child getting bored, you know what will excite him or her.

    3. How to play I Spy?

A great visual game for your child is to get to know the environment around. For a child who has never played I Spy before, you can start by picking out an object within plain sight and mentioning a hint to find objects such as color, shape or direction. When giving a hint, don’t mention the object but instead and say “I Spy something blue.” If there is only one child, then he/she can keep guessing until the object is found. If there are multiple children then they can take turns looking around and guessing. The first child correct gets to spy something next.

    I Spy Ela

    4. How to Play Duck, Duck, and Goose?

This is an indoor game for a minimum of 6 children to play it. First, choose someone to be the Goose ask all the other kids sit in a circle. The Goose then walks around the circle, tapping each kid on the head and says “Duck”. “Duck, duck….” At last, the Goose chooses a new Goose and says “Goose!” instead of “Duck” when tapping a person on the head. The former Goose has to run around the circle and try to sit in the spot of the new Goose, while the new Goose has to get up from where they were sitting and chase the old Goose. If the old goose gets to sit in the circle, the goose is now a duck and the one he tapped will be the new goose and the game goes on.
