IVF treatment is an assisted reproductive technology which assists in conceiving a baby. IVF is required for women who are above 40 years blocked fallopian tubes, ovulation disorders, uterine fibroids, and endometriosis. IVF procedure is also recommended in cases of male and female infertility issues.

Every woman’s desire is to hold a healthy baby in her arms. Sometimes nature takes its own course and renders the female or the male partner incapable of bearing a child.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a process of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) that is taken up for infertility or genetic problems. The people who want to have a baby but are not able to conceive it naturally perform this technique. One out of eight couple or the homosexual couples suffer from this problem and go for IVF treatment. In this process, eggs and sperms are fertilized outside the human body in a laboratory that leads to the formation of embryos. The formed embryos are then placed into the woman’s uterus and the process continues in the normal way inside the uterus of the female partner.

IVF Treatment & Procedures:

  1. 5 steps of the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process
  2. Under what circumstances do I need IVF treatment?

  4. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Success Rate

Steps Performed During In Vitro Fertilization:

1. Stimulation:

Normally a woman can produce only one egg during each menstrual cycle but in the case of IVF technique multiple eggs are required, as using multiple eggs increases the chances of developing a viable embryo. For this purpose, fertility medications are given to increase the number of eggs that the body can produce. Meanwhile, the doctor performs various blood tests and ultrasounds to keep a check on the number of eggs produced.

2. Egg Retrieval:

This step is also known as follicular aspiration. Here surgical procedure is used and is performed with anesthesia. Here the doctor uses an ultrasound wand to guide a needle through the vagina, into the ovary and into the egg-containing follicle. By this, the needle used to suction eggs and fluids out of each follicle.

3. Insemination:

After the stimulation and egg retrieval, male partner gives semen sample. Sperms are mixed with eggs in a petri dish, by a technician. After this process, if good quality embryos are not produced, then the doctor can go for Intrauterine Sperm Injection (ICSI), which increases the success rate of IVF.

4. Embryo Culture:

In this step, the doctor monitors the fertilized eggs. He makes sure that the eggs are dividing and developing as required. The embryos can also go for testing for genetic conditions at this time.

5. Transfer:

After the proper development, the embryos can be implanted. The implantation normally occurs after three to five days of fertilization. In the process of embryo transfer, a thin tube called a catheter is inserted into vagina, past the cervix, and into the uterus. Then the doctor releases the embryo into the uterus.

A woman gets pregnant only when the embryo will implant itself into the uterine wall. A time span of six to ten days is taken for this process. A blood test is conducted to decide if a woman is pregnant or not.

When is IVF Recommended

An infertility specialist in the following cases suggests IVF:

1. Age Over Forty:

IVF is the primary treatment for infertility in a woman over 40 years of age. After this age, conceiving becomes very difficult so IVF is the best way possible to conceive and be gifted with your own baby.

2. Fallopian Tube Damage or Blockage:

  • Fallopian tube damage makes it difficult for an egg to be fertilized. Following are the causes of fallopian tube diseases and disorders:
  • Previous surgery in the pelvic region or in the lower abdomen
  • A rupture of the appendix
  • Use of an Intrauterine Device (IUD) that damages the opening to the fallopian tubes
  • A previous ectopic pregnancy in which the embryo implants itself outside the uterus, especially in the fallopian tubes
  • Endometriosis, in which the tissues that are normally shed during menstruation adhere to the fallopian tubes
    • Fallopian tube tumors
    • Primary fallopian tube carcinoma
    • Birth defects resulting in abnormal fallopian tubes
    • Ovulation Disorders

3. Ovulation disorders include the following cases:

Group 1: Hypothalamic Pituitary Failure, Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (hypogonadotropic hypogonadism)

Group 2: Hypothalamic-pituitary ovarian syndrome (polycystic ovarian syndrome)

Group 3: Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (ovarian failure)

4. Endometriosis:

Endometriosis occurs when the uterine tissue implants and grows outside the uterus. It often affects the normal functioning of ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes.

5. Uterine Fibroids:

Fibroids are the benign tumors in the wall of the uterus. They are commonly inspected in women in the age group of the thirties and forties.

6. Male Infertility:

Following reasons can be contributing in cases of male infertility:

Low Sperm count: Following can be the reason for low sperm count:

  • Damage to testis
  • Decreased hormones
  • Decreased mobility of sperms
  • Abnormally shaped sperms

Cryptorchidism: It is a condition where one or both of the testicles do not descend into the scrotum while the fetus is developing.

Epididymitis: Following are the causes:

  • An infection or sexually transmitted disease called Chlamydia
  • Bacteria in the urinary tract produces scar tissues, which block sperms

Testicular Torsion: Spermatic cord gets twisted, most often found in young males

Testicular Cancer: It is cancer occurred in the testicles, which are located inside the scrotum

Varicocele- Causes:

  • Swelling of the vein that drains the testicles
  • Will keep testicles from cooling sufficiently

Malnutrition or Obesity: Being overweight or underweight, both can be the reasons

Smoking: It is one of the biggest reasons for infertility in males and females as well

Emotional Stress: In today’s lifestyle, emotional stress is a common reason behind infertility

7. Unexplained Infertility:

Infertility, with no cause, despite a complete evaluation process, comes under the category of unexplained infertility.

8. Fertility Preservation For Cancer and Other Health Related Issues:

If a woman is about to start cancer treatment like radiotherapy or chemotherapy that poses a threat to fertility, doctor may suggest to go for IVF for fertility preservation. In such cases, the woman’s eggs are harvested from the ovaries and frozen in an unfertilized state for future use. Another way is to fertilize the eggs and store them after the process of freezing.

Women who have a congenital absence of the uterus surgically removed uterus or in whom a pregnancy poses a serious health issue. In this case, the couple might use another woman to carry the pregnancy. This method of fertilization is called as surrogacy.

IVF Cost in India

The cost of IVF in India differs from place to place. It is dependent on many factors like success rates, the location of the clinic, ratings, and reviews given by the patients. The average cost of treatment in India is more than two lacs. However, it is not fixed, as the rate can go up as high as four lacs for one cycle of the treatment.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Success Rate

The success rate of IVF treatment decreases with the increasing age of the female partner. For example, the women who are more than 35 years have 40.7 % success rate and it is only 3.9 % for women who are more than 42 years old. Apart from this, the success rate also depends on factors like reproductive history, the cause of infertility, and lifestyle factors.
