    • 4.5   (1 Votes)

The cost of IVF treatment in India can range between Rs. 60,000 Rs. 80,000 inclusive of the prescribed medications and drugs. The cost of IVF is influenced by factors such as a womans age, cost of donor sperm or eggs, cost of donor embryos, cost of frozen embryo transfer and cost of TESA.

Until a few decades ago, the term IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) was not well-known among the masses while now it is a widely used treatment to cure infertility. Today, infertility affects 1 in every 5 couples and IVF treatment has come a long way to help meet the need of the day. If one is planning to go for IVF treatment, it becomes essential to understand the cost that In Vitro Fertilization incurs in a cycle as it is a complex procedure and requires thorough planning. India has been a leader in the world of medical tourism, especially for infertility treatments like IVF. Foreign patients pay less than half of what they would be paying in their own countries. Low IVF cost in India is what draws so many reproductively challenged medical tourists to India. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and related treatments in India are extremely affordable, especially when compared to the rates in western countries.

In this article, we will look at:

    1. What is IVF?

IVF or In vitro fertilization is the process where an egg and sperm are fertilized by manually combining it in a laboratory dish and then transferring back the embryo to the uterus. IVF involves many steps, and it takes several months to complete the whole process. For some couples, IVF works on the first try, but many people need more than 1 round of IVF to get pregnant. IVF definitely increases the chances of pregnancy for infertile couples. (1)

    2. What are the benefits of getting IVF treatments in India?

Every year, thousands of patients with infertility problems and other diseases come to India to get treatment from renowned specialists in cities like Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Lucknow, Kolkata, and many others. Given below are a few of the reasons why India has become one of the top destinations for IVF treatments: (2)

    • Low-cost IVF treatment options compared to Western countries.
    • Availability of state-of-the-art technology, which cost so much more in advanced countries like the US, UK, etc.
    • Use of cutting-edge techniques to treat infertility.
    • Experienced IVF specialists who are just as skilled as the doctors in first world countries.
    • Advanced facilities that are on par with the rest of the world to make every patient stay comfortable.
    • Presence of English-speaking medical staff to make communication much easier compared to getting treatments in countries like Thailand or Mexico.
    • Helpful medical tour consultants to help international patients find the best hospitals and most reputed medical experts in the country.

    3. What infertility disorders can be treated in India?

The IVF centers in India treat all types of infertility disorders to help childless patients gain the chance to get pregnant. Some of the disorders that can be treated in India are as follows:

    • Blocked or damaged Fallopian tubes
    • Ovulation disorders.
    • Low sperm count or other disorders that are sperm-related.
    • Endometriosis

Patients who do not want to spend a fortune on treatments can visit India to get IVF Treatment. Gynecologists in India are well-known for the personal attention that they provide to each patient and the extra mile that they go to make sure that the treatments provided are successful. (3)

    4. What is the cost of In Vitro Fertilization Treatments in India?

The cost of IVF treatment in India is generally in the range of Rs. 60,000 – Rs. 80,000 rupees, inclusive of the prescribed medications and drugs. However, some couples may end up spending between 4 to 5 lacs on their IVF treatments. This is because they may need certain other treatments, depending on their medical history and fertility levels. The cost of IVF in India can also vary greatly depending on their location. IVF cost in Delhi can be different from the IVF cost in Chennai. Similarly, the cost of IVF in Mumbai could be different from the rates in Bangalore or Hyderabad. Due to the vast differences in IVF costs, some couples prefer to travel to other cities with more affordable IVF treatment plans. Given below is the cost of IVF treatments in various cities in India: (4)

    5. What are the factors that influence the cost of IVF in India?

Given below are some of the factors that influence the cost of IVF in India:

    • A woman's age is one of the most important factors in determining the success of an IVF treatment. A woman under the age of 35 has a 32 percent chance of a successful pregnancy with her first IVF treatment, whereas women over 39 may need five or more IVF treatments in order to get pregnant. It is important to consider this factor while considering the cost of IVF. This helps one to avoid the financial (and emotional) strain of unexpected and repeated IVF treatments. Many clinics offer multiple-cycle IVF cost plans, which work out cheaper for older couples who are likely to need several IVF treatments. (5)

    • Cost of IVF is also determined by the cost of donor sperm or eggs. Couples with low fertility levels may require either donor sperm or donor eggs or both. The cost of donor sperm is generally in the range of 8,000 to 12,000 rupees. The cost of donor eggs for IVF treatments is much higher and can range from 28,000 to 42,000 rupees.

    • Another factor to include is the cost of donor embryos for IVF treatments. Donated Embryos are sometimes suggested for couples where either one or both partners have a serious health condition that is likely to be passed onto their children. In such a situation, embryos are generally donated by people who have successfully completed their fertility treatment. Cost of donor embryos for IVF treatments is much higher and can range from Rs. 36,000 to Rs. 54,000 rupees. (6)

    • Cost of frozen embryo transfer for IVF treatments. In some cases, couples prefer to freeze embryos from an IVF cycle so that they can be thawed and transferred back to the woman's uterus at a later date and as per the couple's convenience. The cost of a frozen embryo transfer (FET) can be anywhere between Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 30,000 rupees. This, however, does not cover the cost of surrogacy, if the woman cannot carry the child. (7)

    • Cost of TESA for IVF treatments. Testicular Sperm Aspiration is a sperm aspiration and extraction procedure that is often recommended for men who have had a vasectomy but still wish to have children. TESA is a short 30-minute procedure that is performed under local anesthesia where a fine needle is used to extract sperm directly from the testicle. The cost of T.E.S.A is generally between Rs. 12,000 and Rs. 18,000 rupees. (8)

    • Cost of Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) for IVF treatments. An ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) procedure is generally used for couples facing male fertility issues such as low sperm count or poor sperm quality. In this procedure, a single sperm is injected directly into the egg and this drastically increases the chance of successful fertilization. The cost of ICSI can range from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 45,000 rupees.

    • Freezing embryos is becoming a popular choice for women who wish to pursue a career while they are in their 20s and 30s and then raise their children once they hit their 40s. The cost of embryo preservation includes the initial cost of the procedure followed by the annual charges to keep the eggs frozen. The initial procedure for freezing embryos will cost between Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 30,000. An additional cost of Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 6,000 each year may be required to preserve them. (9)

    IVF

Keep in mind that even though the IVF cost in India can vary from one city to the other or from one fertility clinic to the next, one should not base their choice on cost alone. Make sure to look for fertility specialists with good credentials and a strong reputation. One can also check out the reviews of various fertility clinics and talk to other couples who have undergone IVF treatment. IVF treatments may seem expensive but it is fairly reasonable considering the sophisticated medical technology used and the expertise of the doctors. Besides, when it comes to children, as any couple who has undergone the treatment will tell you, it is certainly worth it. Follow Elawoman blog for more information on IVF and fertility treatments.
