    • 4.8   (6 Votes)

In Vitro Fertilization or IVF treatment success depends on certain effective tips such as fertility medications, work out during IVF, supplement intake, acupuncture, specific IVF diet and counseling. For IVF success, avoiding caffeine, smoking, and improving sleep patterns can prove to be helpful.

For all those considering In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment to get pregnant, there are some effectual tips, which can help a couple make, their IVF treatment successful on their first try. IVF brings complexities with itself, therefore it is important for a couple to know about dos and don'ts of the treatment.

Here are some effective IVF success tips. Read more to know about:

1.What role does fertility medications play in IVF success?

Before embarking on the journey of IVF treatments, it is a matter of utmost importance and concern to prepare your body and mind with the following tips. Based on a report published in Hindustan Times, IVF treatment is usually recommended only when the other fertility treatments show a failure in conception. It is considered to be the first line treatment for indications such as poor ovarian reserve, blocked tubes, male factor infertility and advanced stage endometriosis. The report also showed a success rate of 30-35 percent IVF cases in each IVF cycle. (1)

2.Which work out method helps in increasing IVF success?

Before getting started with stimulation, medications to suppress the ovaries are used, which may include birth control pills or a fertility drug called Lupron. Ovarian stimulation is usually anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks long. By the end of this time, another office visit is scheduled for ultrasound monitoring and blood work to ensure that down-regulation has been achieved. (2) Ovarian stimulation medications are usually considered as the first step or primary treatment for women having ovulation disorders. Fertility medications are used for infertility treatments and for IVF procedures with a purpose of increasing the IVF success rate. These medications work by releasing the hormones that either trigger or regulate ovulation. The treatment starts with ovulation stimulants and other birth controls for certain days in order to prevent ovulation from occurring too early in the treatment cycle. After those injectable medications for ovarian stimulation and egg production, followed by a trigger shot is administered into the patient. Then the egg retrieval procedure is performed. Some of the common IVF medications used are:

    • Gonadotropins: Gonadotropins is one of the strongest ovulation-stimulating medicines given by injections containing follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) alone or combined with luteinizing hormone (LH). Gonadotropins are generally used during ART procedures such as Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) or In vitro Fertilization (IVF). Other injectable medicines such as Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) are then used to encourage the release of the eggs when they are mature. (3) In female reproduction, these hormones help to encourage ovaries to mature and release eggs.
    • Bravelle, Fertinex:Bravelle is a new highly purified human-derived FSH, which has been assessed, in various comparative studies of ovarian hyperstimulation for IVF procedures. (4) These are hormonal fertility medications, which are considered less potent than FSH created using recombinant DNA technology.
    • Doxycline: It is an oral antibiotic used to decrease the chance of a bacterial infection to both partners undergoing IVF procedures. It may also reduce the risk of infection following aspiration of the follicles during egg retrieval. Patients are advised to take one doxycycline pill twice a day after they begin hCG shots until the prescription is complete. Doxycycline medicine has a tendency to increase sensitivity to sunlight and anyone taking it should avoid long exposure to sunlight for up to two weeks after taking it. Other side effects may include sore mouth, diarrhea, and genital itching. (5)
    • Progesterone: Progesterone is used to prepare the uterine lining (endometrium) to allow a fertilized egg (embryo) to stick or implant. When pregnancy does not take place, progesterone levels fall and you have your period. When an embryo implants into the endometrial lining, the ovary will produce progesterone until eight weeks into the pregnancy. Even after this, the placenta through the entire pregnancy term - will produce progesterone. (6)

    Work Out During IVF

Based on an article published high-impact exercises such as running, jumping, or intense yoga positions can increase the chances of ovarian torsion. Therefore, women undergoing fertility treatments are advised to avoid vigorous exercises during treatment. IVF success rates are also dependent on physical workout during the treatment. (7) It is always recommended to IVF patients that mild to moderate exercise should be a part of their regime. Some other tips of workout during IVF are:

    • Avoid exercise for more than four hours a week: Exerting for more than four hours a week may start negatively impacting the IVF success rates. Only relaxing and meditative exercise should be done during this time.
    • Low Impact Exercise:During IVF treatment, high impact exercises should be strictly avoided as these may intervene in blood circulation from the ovaries and uterus.

    3. Which supplements should be taken for IVF success?

Here’s a list of supplements to be used during IVF treatment to increase the success rates of the treatment.

    • Vitamin D: For patients who have low Vitamin D levels, such as a level of less than 30 ng/mL, are advised to start a Vitamin D supplement. Iron levels are also tested and based on a Doctor’s recommendation only, iron supplementations are also started. Research shows that vitamin D supplementation plays a vital role in female reproductive system, such as production of anti-Mullerian (AMH), oocyte development, ovarian steroidogenesis and endometrial receptivity. It is assumed that vitamin D is associated with clinical pregnancy outcome of IVF or ICSI cycles. (8)
    • DHEA:It is a naturally occurring substance. The hormone helps in encouraging the production of estrogen and testosterone, two important mediators in the hormonal cascade in ovaries. DHEA can also be used in older women who are at a higher risk of diminished ovarian reserve. A study conducted to evaluate the effect of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) on IVF treatments showed positive results on women who were poor responders to IVF treatment. Hence, it appears to be an effective treatment for age-related sub-fertility. (9)
    • Folic Acid:Folic Acid supplementation is prescribed usually in early developing pregnancy for normal spinal cord development. The recommended dose is 0.4 mg per day and may vary based on the medical history of patients. Research showed that women diagnosed with unexplained infertility consumed considerably more folic acid supplementation and had a higher total folic acid intake as compared to fertile women. Conclusively, high folic acid intake did not increase the possibility of the birth of a healthy baby after IVF treatment in women with unexplained infertility. (10)

4.How can acupuncture help in boosting IVF success rates?

A study was conducted to compare the result of needle acupuncture given to women with IVF treatment or no treatment at all. The study showed results that IVF treatment performed with acupuncture increased the odds of pregnancy by 65 percent (based on early evidence on ultrasound), increased the odds of ongoing pregnancy by 87 percent (based on ultrasound evidence of pregnancy at 12 weeks) and increased the odds of live birth by 91 percent. (11) Studies have also shown that women who administered acupuncture had higher pregnancy success rates than women who did not opt for acupuncture during IVF treatment. It Is a healing procedure which helps in stimulating energy to various organs and body parts and relieving pain. Acupuncture also improves the blood circulation to a woman’s reproductive organs. Acupuncture can also play an effective in embryo implantation. Laser Acupuncture, Electro Acupuncture and Needle acupuncture are three major types of acupuncture methods used in IVF treatments. Administering acupuncture at the time embryo transfer procedure increases the chances of pregnancy.

5.What is the role of IVF diet for a successful pregnancy?

A health fertility diet can act synergistically with the ART (artificial reproduction treatment) process. During infertility treatments, an IVF patients diet should contain whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, processed foods, lean white meats, multigrain and low glycaemic index cereals, oils and foods with polyunsaturated fatty acids such as nuts, seeds, avocado as this kind of fatty acids help in increasing the chances of pregnancy following embryo transfer. Consumption of good fats can help you to protect the heart from diseases, lowering inflammation in the body and improving fertility. A woman undergoing IVF should eat plenty of foods, which are rich in monounsaturated fats such as avocados, sunflower oil, nuts and seeds and olive oil. Along with improving fertility these foods are also helpful in the development of the fetus.

6.What are the precautions for IVF?

There are certain things which should be avoided in the Pre IVF, during and post-cycle treatment for a successful pregnancy. Some don’ts associated with IVF are listed here:

    • Avoid Alcohol: Consumption of alcohol during IVF treatment and pregnancy can be harmful for the health of both the expectant mother and her baby. Various studies have shown clearly, that as a result of drinking alcohol or smoking during treatment, fewer eggs are collected and that increases the chances of miscarriage.
    • Avoid Low Glycemic Index Foods: During IVF treatments, foods that are ranked high in the glycemic index (GI) should be avoided. It is a ranking system, which classifies foods depending on how easily they are digested. Lower the GI, the slower they are digested, thereby ensuring a gradual yet steady supply of energy. Foods, which are lower in their GI, play a crucial role in maintaining healthy blood glucose levels and reducing weight. Legumes, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, broccoli, sweet potato and mushrooms are some of the foods in this category. Processed foods and their associated oils and sugars are considered bad for the body.

7.How counseling during IVF increases IVF success?

Before and during IVF treatment, having word with the best IVF doctors in India with high success rates is important for the sake of mental well being and stability. IVF may take a huge toll on the mental and emotional health of patients so counseling can help you in dealing with anxiety, fear, depression and excitement related to the treatment and pregnancy.
