Embryo transfer procedure in IVF treatment includes steps such as ultrasound, fresh or frozen embryo transfer, followed by implantation of embryo, followed by blood test or pregnancy kit test. Embryo transfer procedure is the final step of the procedure which is must for successful IVF pregnancy.

Embryo transfer is the fourth and final step in the process of In-vitro Fertilization (IVF). It involves placing fertilized eggs back into the uterus to initiate the process of pregnancy.

The IVF process includes the following steps: (a) Stimulating eggs for development (b) Retrieval of eggs (c) Fertilization of eggs in a lab (d) Transferring of fertilized embryo back into the uterus. Embryo transfer is a procedure in which the fertilized eggs are placed in a woman's uterus, with the intent of helping her conceive. Depending on a woman’s age and profile, one to five embryos are transferred into the woman’s uterus after 1-6 days of incubating the embryos in a lab to ensure that the healthiest embryos are placed in the uterus.

The Process of an Embryo or Egg Transfer:

  1. Insertion of Embryo
  2. Ultrasound & Embryo Implantation
  3. Blood Test or Pregnancy Kit

The Embryo Transfer Procedure Includes The Following Steps:

1. Insertion of Embryo

A very thin, flexible, plastic catheter is inserted into the vagina of a woman, through the cervix, and into the uterus. A syringe attached to the catheter injects the embryo(s) into the uterus.

2. Ultrasound & Embryo Implantation

An ultrasound might be used to guide the catheter into the uterus, and the woman might be given sedation in order to relieve her from discomforts. After the procedure, the woman remains in the recovery room. After resting on her back for 4-6 hours, she can resume normal activities. Once in the body, the embryo implants into the uterine wall (endometrium) within 1-5 days after the procedure.

3. Blood Test or Pregnancy Kit

If the embryo is successfully implanted, it will release a chemical called beta-HCG into the body, 1-2 weeks post the procedure. A blood test can confirm whether the pregnancy has been initiated or not, as it is more reliable than home pregnancy tests. However, a woman can also go for home pregnancy kit after 2 weeks of the procedure.

To increase the chances of success of IVF, women should do regular exercise and sleep for at least eight hours. This will surely help them in a better delivery.
