Theres no difference between test tube babies and normally conceived babies. The only difference, which lies, between a test-tube baby and normal baby is how the eggs were fertilized and the baby was conceived. When natural conception is not possible, a test tube baby or IVF method is used.

Children conceived via Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) and those born naturally have an only difference in the process of conception and fertilization. After a few weeks of ART procedures, IVF pregnancy becomes ‘normal pregnancy’ in every respect. (1)

Let’s look in Detail at:

  1. How IVF or test tube babies are different from normally conceived babies?
  2. How timeline of pregnancy differs in IVF pregnancy and normal pregnancy?
  3. What are the risks of preterm birth and mental disorders after IVF?
  4. How healthy are the test tube babies?

1. How IVF or Test Tube Babies Are Different from Normally Conceived Babies?

A test-tube baby or IVF baby is the result of medical intervention of several medical and surgical procedures, which manipulates both the egg and sperm cells for successful fertilization. (5) Medical intervention for conception is needed when a natural birth or normal baby is not possible. In such cases, children are born via IVF procedures where eggs are fertilized outside a woman’s body. A normal baby refers to a baby that has been born via natural pregnancy and fertilization. The procedure of natural fertilization works as when the ovum is fertilized by the sperm in the woman’s uterus. A natural pregnancy can also be termed as In-vivo fertilization that accounts to the normal method of fertilization between female egg and male sperm within a human body. (2)

2. How Timeline of Pregnancy Differs in IVF Pregnancy and Normal Pregnancy?

The biggest difference between normal pregnancy and an IVF pregnancy is that during the initial phase of a normal pregnancy, most women aren’t aware of pregnancy until a month or more. However, in IVF pregnancy, such awareness begins right after the embryo is transferred. (3)

In a normal pregnancy, unlike IVF, a woman’s ovary grows and matures a single egg inside an egg follicle at a time. While in IVF, a woman is given stimulation medicines for 7 to 10 days to allow ovaries to grow and mature multiple eggs. (4)

In IVF pregnancy, IVF patient may ‘feel’ symptoms of early pregnancy, which are often after effects of fertility medications used in the procedure, which does not necessarily mean that a woman is pregnant. Symptoms of Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome can also resemble early pregnancy symptoms. (3)

In a normal pregnancy, some women may experience early pregnancy symptoms such as tender breasts, nausea, food aversions and implantation spotting around three weeks of pregnancy. (4)

During two to ten weeks of pregnancy, a woman who conceived via IVF procedures may be monitored more intensively than the one who conceived naturally. After or around ten weeks, if all goes well, an IVF pregnancy becomes indistinguishable from a ‘normal’ pregnancy. (4) (6)

3. What Are the Risks of Preterm Birth and Mental Disorders After IVF?

Risks for Preterm Birth after IVF

Various studies have shown that there is a mild risk of low birth weight or premature delivery with IVF, as pregnancies, which involve multiples, tend to have earlier delivery dates. However, chances of having a premature baby are regardless of the procedure of conception. There are other factors as well, which are associated with having a premature baby such as maternal health, age and diet. Even after settling for other factors causing a higher rate of preterm birth, babies conceived via IVF have a higher chance of being born early than babies conceived naturally may be because of:

  • Multiple embryo transfer
  • Hormonal causes
  • Maternal factors
  • Increased medical management

Apart from this, other risks associated with IVF pregnancy will depend on the factors, which are involved in infertility. The factors, which may affect the success of pregnancy, are anatomical factors, age, immunological factors or endocrine factors. (7) (8)

Risk of Mental Disorders

Whether a child is conceived naturally or via IVF, there is as such no effect on the resulting baby's mental health. However, several findings have shown a small but increased risk of developing a mental disorder like autism and behavioral problems in children whose mothers conceived using artificial insemination methods. The general conclusion of the study is that test-tube babies are generally just as mentally and physically healthy as naturally conceived babies. (9)

4. How Healthy Are the Test Tube Babies?

Various studies have revealed that IVF or test tube babies are as normal as other babies and do not have any physical or mental deformities or disabilities owing to the process of conception. Yet the fact is turning true that many test tube babies have low birth weight. Test tube babies are more likely to weigh less than 2.5 kilograms than normally conceived babies. This is not only the case with twins or other multiple births; the same is true for single babies as well. Low-birth-weight babies often have long-term health problems such as obesity, diabetes and hypertension when they are 50 years old or above. (10)
