Diet Before Starting IVF

Inclusion of certain food items in your diet before taking IVF treatment is a must. This results in production of good quality of eggs and sperms, which in turn results in higher success rate for the treatment. Start eating protein and carbohydrate rich food items, which are both homemade and organic.

There are many factors which determine IVF success rate such as maternal age, previous pregnancy complications, extent of fertility issues, clinic choice and last but not the least lifestyle. It is believed that by bringing certain healthy changes in lifestyle and diet one can expect a positive impact on the success rate of IVF treatment. Researchers believe that healthy diet plays an important role in IVF success.  Before you start your IVF treatment, you must start eating healthy foods meeting all your nutritional requirements. Getting aware of right food and diet for IVF success is highly recommended for couples.

You should start taking healthy diet even before IVF treatment is started. Following a healthy diet course prior to the treatment helps in the growth of good quality of eggs. Here is how to manage your diet before IVF. This includes both foods to have and foods to be avoided before starting the ART treatment. Prone to lazy lifestyles makes us eat unhealthy food, so it would be better you should know what to include in your diet and what not. Here are things you should include in your diet from the time you wake up till you go to your bed.

Pre Breakfast:

After waking up in the morning, you can drink a glass of lukewarm water. After half an hour, you can take 5-6 soaked almonds and walnuts.

Breakfast:

Starting the day with a balanced and healthy diet makes an easier way to successful IVF. It is always said that proteins are the source of macronutrient which is required by a human body in the large amounts that helps in building body tissue and muscles. So, in your breakfast, taking enough amounts of proteins will become the best way to help. For a woman, it is required to take 46 grams of proteins per day, so you can try for 30 percent of proteins when you start your day.

Fertility boosting foods

Sprouts, fruit juices, sandwich, brown bread, egg, idli, poha, apple, yogurt or the light oil dishes are the best diet you can take in morning. For a successful IVF you should always focus on food rich in proteins along with Fertility Boosting Foods. Remember to take heavy and healthy breakfast, but less than your need. Do not overeat.

Mid Morning Snacks:

Before taking lunch, you can go for a fruit of your choice. It can be pear, banana, orange or apple. Avoid fruits with high calories. You can also take buttermilk, coconut water, juice or green tea depending on your preferences.

Lunch:

Afternoon says you to add lot of green and leafy vegetables in your plate. You need to have a balanced diet in afternoon. Add curd, pulses and more amounts of vegetables in your plate along with bread/ chapati and brown rice. This will help ease your journey to successful IVF.

Evening Snacks:

If your stomach is demanding something, try taking light diet in evening. You can take smoothies, shakes, bhel, chats but all food items should be homemade. You can also read about food items to conceive.

Shakes

Dinner

Night is the time when you need to eat less. Eating before 8 is always helpful, but you should consume very less at night before you go to bed.

At nighttime, you can take 2-multigrain chapattis along with 1 bowl of dal. You can also go for Dalia, Porridge or Upma.

Don’t forget to take milk.

Note:Whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner, eating more proteins and fibrous food will help you complete your goal to successful IVF. Always remember to eat your food at the same time. Never skip your meals.

Here is the list of food you should include in your diet before IVF:

  • On the other time of the day, you can consume the rest 70 percent of the daily protein requirement.
  • Vegetables, fruits, and whole grains consist ample of proteins; you can go for green and leafy vegetables.
  • Try out seasonal fruits and whole grain wheat recipes as it benefits a lot.

Making breakfast your largest meal of the day is a challenge but it is the way to take on, but you should not add unhealthy food in your diet so here are the food you should avoid:

  • Having plenty of protein with breakfast serves two main functions; it balances out your blood sugar throughout the day, and it keeps you full throughout the day, but avoid intake of sugar and processed food.
  • Preventing you from overindulging on sugar or carbs at dinnertime. Once again, this is something simple but it has a profound long-term effect on the health of our hormones and it might result in IVF failure.
  • Avoid consumption of oily food, and white food, indeed they are tasty but it has adverse effect on the body and it misbalances digestion and more.

Points to keep in mind during every single diet of the day

Eat Warm and easy to digest

Other than proteins you need to keep in your mind that prepared food you eat or the diet you take should be warm. Cold food should not be consumed. Cold food not only takes time to digest but they are also difficult to digest. Your body should get ideal nutrients to help in the process of reproduction. Warm food is easy to digest and they also help in managing the physical balance.

Easy to digest

Break your meals into multiple parts

Instead of consuming three meals a day, before going for IVF process, you need to break your meals into 6 parts. Try eating healthy food and consuming fruits. In case you are sensitive to any food, you should talk to your doctor before that.

Stay hydrated

If you are not in the habit to drink plenty of liquid, you should start it immediately. Staying hydrated is a must before IVF process starts. At least drink 3 to 4 liters of water per day, including juices, coconut water or the other liquid you like. If you are overweight, water will help you manage your weight. In this condition, you should try drinking more water.

Staying hydrated is the quickest way to aid digestion and absorption of the nutrients. Other than this there is much more benefit.

Stay away from white foods

White food leads to a problem as it is difficult to digest. So before you start your IVF process, you should exclude entire white foods from your diet.

Avoid white bread, white rice, white pasta, white sugar, etc. These are usually refined and therefore not good for your body. You want to eat things in their natural form as much as possible. Switch to gluten-free or whole grain bread, brown rice, and honey as an alternative to the above mentioned items.

Fill your plate with plants and consume fruits

Make sure that plants make up at least half of your plate: plants contain the vitamins, nutrients, and minerals your body requires for optimal function. For increased vitality you’ll want to consume a wide array of colors – red, orange, yellow, green, and purple – the more, the better! Always make sure that at least half of your plate consists of plants, and no, potatoes don’t count.

Fruits

Eat healthy fats

Increase consumption of healthy fats: these are crucial for healthy hormone synthesis. Foods like avocados, wild fish, olive oil, coconut oil, nuts, and seeds are great examples of sources of healthy fats. Being healthy does not mean skipping out on fats. It’s being aware of the types of fats we’re ingesting. You want to stay away from saturated and Trans fats while increasing your intake of mono or polyunsaturated fats.

Add them all to your daily diet and make a perfect diet plan for yourself. Always keep in mind to chew the food you eat properly and always eat the food you and your taste buds like. These are the key to achieve wellness in your body and making your body counter-reproductive before you proceed for IVF. You can also take suggestions from a dietician or your nutrition expert for what to include or exclude from your diet.

Take Folic Acid Supplements

Start taking folic acid supplements, as it is one of the most vital nutrients for successful pregnancy. Start taking it even before your IVF treatment is started.

I followed the same diet plan as given in this article. It was really helpful and I would suggest everyone go through the same. Some of my friends who are about to get pregnant through some infertility treatments also follow the same diet plan.
