Who Needs Surrogacy?

Dr. Sheetal Pandey

Doctors usually suggest surrogacy as last resort to multiple IUI and IVF failures or in cases of extreme medical conditions like Cancer or extreme cases of PCOS, PCOD. It can also be opted by single parents or same sex couples or by those females who have uterus abnormalities or cases of unexplained infertility.are others who opt for surrogacy for the obvious reasons.

Starting one’s own family is a dream that every individual nurtures at some point in their life.  A number of couples struggle to have a baby naturally due to several infertility issues. Nowadays due to advancement in medical technology, every couple can realize their dream of parenthood. Some of the commonly used fertility treatments include IUI, IVF, Egg donor IVF and Surrogacy. Surrogacy is the last resort when all other fertility treatment fails. Various fertility issues form legal grounds to qualify individual/s for surrogacy. There can be medical reasons such as uterus abnormalities, uterus absence, uterine scarring, past pregnancy complications and history of recurrent miscarriages that may play a hurdle in the way of conception. Below are the reasons that can form the basis to allow a childless couple to opt for surrogacy.

Reasons to opt for surrogacy

There is a major advancement observed in the field of infertility treatment and the different assisted reproductive techniques are being used successfully to assist couples in conceiving. Yet there are a great number of caseswhere, even the latest of the technologies can’t do the deed and hence the need for surrogacy arises. The problem can be seen either inmale or female fertility levels or in some cases with both. For example, low sperm count and motility, early menopause, uterine abnormalities, sexually transmitted diseases (STD), and many other factors are the reasons that cause infertility making surrogacy as a viable choice.

reasons to opt surrogacy

There are a number of reasons for which a couple may want to opt for surrogacy. Following are the ten most common reasons that lead to the need of surrogacy.

1. Medical reasons

Although there have been constant advancements on the medical front that have given way to effective fertility treatments but they come with their own limitations. Those with untreatable fertility conditions, women with serious health concerns, and those who can’t carry a full-term pregnancy for any reason have surrogacy as the best choice to have a child without adopting.

2. Age factor

Age is another major reason that can greatly impact the fertility levels and reproductive abilities of a couple. Sometimes, trying to conceive at a later stage due to career choices, professional commitments and delayed marriages can cause trouble in conceiving. After a certain age, the likelihood of developing reproductive complications increases thereby making surrogacy as inevitable.

Chances of getting pregnant are reduced drastically with increasing age. Between 25-35 years, woman’s reproductive health is known to be in the most functional condition. A woman has 20 percent of chances to get pregnant when she lies between this age group whereasa woman in her 40’s has just 5 percent or fewer chances to get pregnant.

3. Same-Sex

Gay couples may not start families with their own kids without surrogacy. Surrogacy makes it possible for them to have their own family. A lesbian couple can seek sperm donation while gay couple needs eggs and a mother to carry the child.

Same sex

No matter why or who needs surrogacy, Elawoman is always there to help. It has been found that surrogacy practice is more in effect and has got public acceptance worldwide. Till now, surrogacy has helped many couples in completing their family.

4. Individual’s choice

Every individual has the right to start his own family. And it can be a personal decision of a couple or a single parent to choose surrogacy. Today, many couples separate just after few years of marriage or decide not to marry. For those individuals, having own family is possible through surrogacy and they can become a single parent.

5. Problem with uterus

The woman who is facing the problem with her uterus health and functioning is at a higher risk of infertility. The problem in the uterus is generally because of genetic defects as well as hormonal malfunction. For some women, certain diseases during the early childhood might also be the reason for a deteriorated condition of the uterus due to which they may go for surrogacy.

In the above cases, a woman can’t bear the child in her womb, so the couple opts surrogacy as the final decision.

6. Uterine and its structural issues

Presence of extra tissues is the biggest cause for uterine and structural issues. This has a negative impact on bearing a child in a natural manner. Pregnancies achieved in the presence of uterine and structural issues have more chances of resulting into a miscarriage. Women with uterine and structural issues need surrogacy where uterine and its structural problems are the main grounds to make surrogacy legit as an option.

7. Additional Medical conditions

For some women getting pregnant is not a problem, but carrying the child for 9 months is not possible due to thin uterus lining, incompetent cervix or weak uterine structure. Even if the woman is able to carry the child full term, the baby can’t survive long after the delivery. Recurrent miscarriages and preterm labor are some of the reasons why surrogacy is chosen to have one’s own baby. Surrogacy is the best option for the certified actions and medical treatment. Nowadays, many females suffer from diabetes, thyroid, and other diseases. These diseases make it difficult to conceive or carry a pregnancy successfully and put the life of the baby at risk. So the surrogacy comes as a recommended option.

8. Unexplained Fertility

Sometimes, due to an unexplained fertility reason, the couple is not able to conceive naturally or with the aid of other fertility treatments. In such cases, surrogacy is the last option to conceive one’s own child.

9. Uterine Cancer

When the endometrial lining is found to have cancer cells, the entire uterus needs to be removed to prevent the spread of cancer into other body parts. The process of uterus removal is known as hysterectomy. In such cases, a surrogate mother is required to hold a couple’s baby for the entire nine-month duration.

10. Single Parent (Male) Surrogacy

Some male individuals do not want to marry a partner but still desire to have their own baby. In such cases, they can opt for surrogacy and have their baby with the help of an egg donor and a surrogate mother.

If we talk of legal aspects, first of all the doctor evaluates whether the person or couple is eligible for surrogacy. Once it is clear from the doctor’s side, he prepares a medical certificate mentioning that a couple is medically unable to carry a baby and surrogacy is the only option left. After framing the medical certificate, it is sent to the Court for legal approval claiming that the couple can undergo surrogacy. If the court does not approve surrogacy for a couple due to some legal reasons, then that couple cannot undergo surrogacy according to Indian laws.

Feel free to contact at +917899912611 for assured surrogacy packages. Surrogacy cost in India can vary from Rs. 10 Lacs to 15 Lacs. The surrogacy cost includes the nine-month compensation of surrogate mother, doctor’s consultation, legal formalities cost, medicines and IVF procedure.
