8 Things To Do After IUI To Ensure Successful Pregnancy

Following adequate precautions after IUI treatment or IUI procedure can be very effective for positive results. Taking sufficient rest, starting vitamin supplements, eating healthy food, having patience and positivity all leads to successful IUI. Also, refrain yourself from strenuous activities and rough intercourse to further improve your IUI success rate.

IUI treatment once completed requires proper care to achieve successful results.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is done by inserting concentrated sperm into the uterus right after ovulation. The aim is to bring the sperm and the egg together in a close proximity to enhance a woman’s chance of getting pregnant. It can be utilized either as a stand-alone infertility option or in conjunction with infertility medications. To make your IUI treatment or IUI procedure a success, you need to be very careful with your health as many things affect your IUI success rate. While IUI can be very effective, there are a couple of things you can do afterward to help ensure the best possible outcome. Here are some of the things that play a vital role in getting pregnant after IUI. In this article, we’ll take you through important things to do and avoid after IUI to improve the success of the IUI treatment including the best sleeping position and diet guidelines.

Things to do after IUI procedure

You can get back to your usual routine if you feel completely fine including exercising and attending office. But still, there are some precautions which you should keep in mind to get positive IUI results.

1. Take rest

There isn’t any need for you to restrict traveling or to have a complete bed rest after IUI process. However, if you feel some sort of discomfort or anxiety then you should take rest for few days. Always listen to your body before taking any decision.

2. Start taking progesterone and folic acid supplement

Progesterone supplements shall be started right after insemination procedure of IUI as per your doctor’s advice. Progesterone helps in maintaining uterine thickness, thus helping in successful conception. Along with progesterone, also take folic acid supplement which is really necessary for the healthy growth and development of the baby in the first trimester.

3. Eat healthy and balanced diet

Eating healthy and balanced diet is the best way to keep yourself fit and active. Healthy food makes you feel fresh and positive throughout the day. It also meets your daily nutritional requirement. Also, include Vitamin D foods in your diet to improve your further chances of IUI success.

4. Stay positive and have patience

Patience is the key to a relaxed and happy mind that in turn is more receptive to changes caused by a pregnancy in process. Keep yourself fruitfully occupied during that crucial 2 weeks wait period. Implantation does take an approximate time of around 5 days and the hormone levels will start reflecting in a test sometimes after this period is over. A hasty test may give you a false negative result.

5. Check tenderness in the breasts

Don’t confuse tenderness and soreness in breasts as a sign of early pregnancy or menstruation or any other symptom after the IUI procedure. If breast soreness persists with delayed period, then take a pregnancy test to check your results. Otherwise, taking unnecessary pregnancy test can increase your stress and anxiety.

6. Don’t take Stress

Stress can seriously impact your hormone levels and hence deteriorates your chances of conceiving. Remain stress free for 2 weeks wait period and try to involve yourself in some productive activity.

7. Say No to Pain Relief Medicines

It is always better to stay away from NSAIDs or painkillers like ibuprofen as they need not be a necessarily safe option for possible cramps and pain caused after IUI. Better to consult a specialist.

8.Start Doing moderate exercise

Start doing moderate exercise after 2 days of insemination procedure improves blood supply to the pelvic region including uterus and other reproductive organs. Hence, there are higher chances of IUI success.

Things to avoid after IUI procedure

1. Avoid Sex

There are no such directions to stay away from having sex after an IUI procedure but if you have experienced any amount of bleeding during IUI, it is recommended to abstain from sexual intercourse for roughly about 48 hours. Otherwise, it can have certain implications on conception.

2. Avoid Swimming:

However, there is no strong evidence to prove swimming to be causing any negative impact on the process of IUI, you may still want to avoid it for at least 48 hours after it because there might be infections that can be contracted from the pool water.

3. Avoid strenuous activities

Avoid any type of strenuous activities such as lifting heavy weight, heavy exercises, cycling, swimming or any other activity which requires a lot of stamina and energy.

4. Say no to smoking and drinking

Stay away from bad habits to conceive successfully. Smoking and drinking have negative effects on conception.

After IUI FAQs

1. What to eat after the IUI process is completed?

It is of utmost importance to have certain foods that work wonders for an effective IUI procedure. This list consists of figs, Brazil nuts, Goji berries, Omega-rich foods, Leafy green vegetables, Olives, Avocado, Eggs, and Maca root powder.

2. Best Position Way to Sleep after IUI?

It has been observed that women who lie supine, that is on their back, for about 15 minutes after the IUI procedure have 50% more chances of achieving a pregnancy.

3. How to sit post IUI procedure?

You should not feel too worried about the sitting posture after an IUI procedure. Your doctor will ask you to lay down on the back for as long as 20 minutes in general for letting sperms stay inside the vagina for a longer duration of time, however, the cervix is closed and high it is a comfortable thing to do before you will be allowed to go home. After this, you can sit any which way you feel comfortable.

4. Foods to be avoided after IUI?

It is their general view that one must turn to a healthier diet with a variety of foods included in the menu but there are certain foods that must be avoided with equal concern as they may interfere with the process of conception after going through IUI procedure. Following are certain foods that need to go off your 2 week wait menu with an immediate effect:

  • Caffeine
  • Flaxseed oil
  • Alcohol
  • Cheese like Feta, Queso Blanco, Camembert, Brie, Roquefort, and Queso Fresco.
  • Ready-to-eat meats/ frozen meats may contain a bacterium listeria that causes listeriosis. Pregnant women are at a greater risk of catching this infection as compared to a normal healthy adult.
  • Raw eggs
  • Fish with high mercury content, but you can have Crabs, Shrimps, Canned light tuna (only 6 ounces a week), Salmon, Catfish, Cod, Pollock, and Tilapia.
  • Excessive juices and smoothies, due to the fact that most of the precious fiber and flesh is removed in the preparation process. Having raw fruits is healthier any given time while limiting the juice intake two 2 cups a day while veggies to 3 cups.
  • Aerated drinks/ soft drinks
  • Sugar and simple carbs as all the essential nutrients like B vitamins, antioxidants, and iron that have a great role in supporting a pregnancy are extracted away from these during processing.
  • Processed Foods

5. Bed rest after IUI, do you really need?

According to a research, it has been proved that bed rest after intrauterine insemination (IUI) increases the chances of fertilization when compared to immediate mobilization or mobilization after 10 minutes of supine rest.

If you are planning to undergo a fresh cycle of IUI, then talk to Ela Fertility Experts before proceeding with the treatment to understand the IUI procedure, cost, success rate in a more detailed and transparent manner.

Alcohols and cigarettes should be avoided for a high IUI success rate. It's better if one can quit them.
