IUI or intrauterine insemination is a type of fertility treatment, which is less invasive and cheaper than IVF. The IUI procedure or IUI treatment and artificial insemination involve carrying the sperm and placing it in the uterus for closer proximity to the egg.

The need of IUI arises for:

1. Unexplained infertility

2. Erectile Dysfunction

3. PCOD

4. Single Fallopian Tube blockage

How does IUI work: In IUI, the egg is naturally fertilized in the body. However, unlike sex (where the sperm reaches the egg through penis penetration and ejaculation), in IUI procedure or IUI treatment and artificial insemination, the sperm is medically inserted with the healp of a catheter. The objective of IUI is to increase the number of sperms being placed in the fallopian tube in order to initiate pregnancy. This procedure is performed during the fertile window to ensure higher possibility of conception. A woman is given fertilization drugs before the process is kickstarted so as to stimulate fertility. The ovulation window is closely monitored before the initiation of the process.

IUI for Male Infertility or Sperm Donation: If you’re interested in IUI procedure or IUI treatment and artificial insemination because your partner has a fertility issue (e.g. ejaculation disorder, low sperm count, etc.), then as a part of the process your partner’s sperm cells would first be collected in a lab and then prepared by clinical washing - using only the fastest sperm cells in the sample. If you are using a sperm donor, then the sperm would first be thawed from frozen and then prepared in the same way as a fresh sperm. The sample is then inserted into the uterus using a catheter.

With 3 to 6 cycles of IUI procedure or IUI treatment and artificial insemination, the success rate can go up to 80%.
