What is Safe Period?
As the term denotes, it is a time period when a woman has less chances of getting pregnant. Menstrual cycle is a phase of 5 days from which women go through every month. Discontinued intercourse and safe periods combination is used frequently for avoiding pregnancy. The woman cannot get pregnant if couple had sex when there is no egg.
What are menstrual cycle phases?
Every month periods occur when female reproductive system shows a similar and regular events pattern which is hormones controlled. There are four phases of this cycle.
1- Menstrual Phase or Menstruation
The first day of the period is the first day of menstrual phase and official start of women’s menstrual cycle. Menstrual blood penetrates through uterus via cervix and vagina. Then it is shed from uterus lining and comes out through vaginal opening.
This phase lasts for 3 to 7 days.
2- Follicular Phase
This stage is about the woman body preparing itself every month for pregnancy. It begins with 'oestrogen hormone' thickens the uterus lining and then develops it for fertilised egg. Other hormone 'follicle-stimulating hormone' then stimulates the ovarian follicles (each follicle has an egg) to grow. Every month only one egg is ready for fertilisation. During the ovulation days, oestrogen level of women rises and remain on peak till the beginning of next phase.
3- The Ovulation Phase
Ovulation is basically the time when one of the ovaries releases mature egg. The menstruation phase pushes the oestrogen to release a spike in third hormone i.e. 'luteinising hormone' or LH. It makes rupturing in follicle and releases an egg which travels out of ovary to the nearest fallopian tube and then into uterus. The uterus lining keep grows thicker as the egg moves down from fallopian tube which takes several days.
4- The Luteal Phase
This phase starts after the ovulation phase. Corpus Luteum (an empty follicle) cells start making oestrogen along with large amount of progesterone. Progesterone then actuate or stimulate the uterus lining so that it can prepare for fertilised egg.
There are two conditions:
- The egg will move to uterus and attaches to lining if you become pregnant.
- If not, then the lining of uterus drains or shed via vaginal opening.
What is unsafe period or fertile days?
Unsafe Period or fertile days for having a sexual intercourse is generally known as 'the time of ovulation'.
During this time period a woman can conceive if she has an intercourse.
What is the process of calculating the time of ovulation?
- Let us assume a woman has a menstruation length of 30 days, so the ovulation period falls in the mid of 10 days.
- For avoiding pregnancy, you should not indulge in unprotected sexual intercourse during this period.
- Apart from those days, the safe days or safe period for avoiding the pregnancy are the ones starting from menstruation till 10th day and then from 21 day up for menstruation.
