Low sperm count causes are overweight, keeping laptop around the area of testicles, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Sperm Analysis test is performed to find out the sperm count, quality and motility. Male infertility treatments such as assisted reproductive technology, infections, and surgery are performed for treating low sperm count.

There is a term for low sperm count called as oligospermia which describes the condition when the sperm count is low i.e. less than 15 million sperm/ml. Azoospermia is other condition when in the semen sample there is no sperm at all. It is important to count the number of sperm if you are trying to have a child.

Cause of low sperm count

There are internal factors such as Varicocele which can lower down the sperm count. And external factors such as drug usage, smoking, poor diet and lack of exercise also contributes in decrease sperm count. There are other external factors which can affect the sperm count:

1- Heat can have an adverse effect on normal sperm production. Soaking in bathtub full of hot water which can halt sperm generation completely.

2- Overweight man or obese man can sterile as the sagging layers of fat can overheat the testicles.

3- Men who work for long hours may become a victim of infertility due to increased heat in the private area.

4- Smoking also reduces both sperm count and sperm mobility.

5- Excessive alcohol intake can also affect the infertility. It can lower the production of sperm and male hormone testosterone.

6- A workaholic man might find stress and fatigue interfering with sperm generation.

Infected semen is also a cause of infertility. It was also believed that mumps also cause sterility in men.

Sperm count

And it is also known that when testicles involved in mumps like orchitis (painful swelling in testicles) which is actually rare.

What is Sperm Analysis?

Explaining man's sperm count is bit complex process. There are certain things which are considered in semen analysis. Concentration- it means how many sperm are there per cc or millilitre of semen (the fluid). Second step involves how many cc of semen is present.

Another method of measuring to consider the sperm percentage which is moving forward progressively. 50% motility is defined as normal. The next thing is sperm morphology which explains what sperm percentage looks normal. While assessing the fertilizing potential of given specimen you need to keep in mind all the factors.

Sperm count

Slight abnormality in sperm count can be compensated by better mobility or increase in volume.

Infertility treatments for low sperm count

Treatments for male with low sperm count vary on the condition. For example, surgery is the common treatment for those suffering from varicocele. Some of the Treatments include-

1- Surgery: Varicocele is corrected surgically or blocked vas deferens is repaired. Earlier performed vasectomies can be reversed. Or in situations where no sperm is available to ejaculate, it can be retrieved directly from testicles or epididymis by using sperm retrieval technique.

2- Infections treatment: Antibiotics are available which can cure reproductive tract infections but not restore fertility always.

3- Sexual intercourse problems treatment: Counseling and medication helps in improving the fertility like erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation.

4- Treatment and medication for hormone: After consultation and diagnosis, you doctor may advise you for hormone replacement or medications where infertility is due to high or low levels of certain hormones or issues with the way body uses hormones.

5- Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART): It involves taking sperm via normal ejaculation, extracting through surgery or from donor depending on case and wish. Then the sperm is injected into female genital tract or used for IVF or ICSI.
