Ovulation Pain Symptoms and Causes - Know about them all

Ovulation pain symptoms include uncomfortable pain, cramps in the lower abdomen, pain till two days, change in the sides of pain combined with mood swings. Ovulation pain causes are varied and in severe cases you need to get it checked from your doctor. You must differentiate ovulation pain from implantation pain.

Ovulation is a phase through which every woman goes every month. It is a part of the menstrual cycle involving the egg (ovum) release from one of the ovaries. It occurs once in every month until the women attain menopause (except during pregnancy and breastfeeding). (1)

And there are one in five women who go through discomfort and pain during ovulation. Although the pain duration varies from woman to woman it lasts from a few minutes to 48 hours. And in many cases, ovulation pain doesn't imply anything wrong. But if you are experiencing severe pain then it might indicate gynecological conditions which also includes endometriosis. It is recommended to consult the doctor if the pain lasts for more than three days or might be related to menstrual symptoms like heavy bleeding. It is also termed as 'mid-cycle pain'. (2)

    Ovulation Pain: Symptoms

Below are the possible symptoms of ovulation pain (3) (4) (5):

1- Pain within the hipbone i.e. lower abdomen.
    Ovulation pain

2- It usually occurs two weeks prior to the menstrual period.

3- Depending upon which ovary will be releasing an egg, the pain will either be felt on the right or left side.

4- From one cycle to the next, the pain switches to either side or it remains on one side for the next few cycles.

5- The pain duration ranges from minutes to the next two days.

6- The sensation of pain differs within individual’s i.e. uncomfortable pressure, sharp pains or cramps or twinges.

    Ovulation pain & Pregnancy

There have been several types of research on ovulation pain and it suggests it actually signals the ovulation. In one study it is found that on the same day the 'luteinizing hormone' (LH) is at the peak, which is detected by ovulation predictor kits. During the woman's most fertile time it is at its peak i.e. just before they ovulate.

Where in other research ultrasound technology was used to check whether the mid-cycle cramps are ovulation pain or not but in the result it is found that ovulation took place after some days when the woman reported she had side pain. This mid-cycle cramp makes ovulation painless ideal time to have intercourse for pregnancy, as you need to have sex before ovulation not after.

    Mid cycle pain

Though this symptom indicates that ovulation is ready to take place, so it is better not to rely on ovulation pain as a first indicator of the fertile window.

Difference between Implantation Cramps & Ovulation Pain

There were some reports as some women were experiencing cramps during embryo implantation. But the thing needs to understand is that it is not similar to ovulation pain. (6)

Ovulation pain occurs two weeks before the period in lower abdomen i.e. inside hipbone. The pain is on either side depending upon which ovary is releasing the egg. Some women might experience sharp pain while others may experience mild pain. Whereas implantation cramps refer to other processes, which are taking place within the body, which leads to mild cramping. In the Luteal phase, before your menstrual cycle, progesterone hormone levels are high which relaxes the digestive muscles and slows down the digestion process. This leads to cramping. It doesn't matter whether you are pregnant or not progesterone level is quite high at that time. (7)

If it is not the above-mentioned pain but is severe and interfering in your daily life or you are experiencing pain during intercourse, then it is advised to consult the doctor.
