Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek is considered as the first microbiologist because of his incomparable and peerless discoveries including sperm cell and a rare disease of short-breathed hiccups. He invented first single-lens microscope, which could magnify human vision up to 300 times. He has also made several observations on muscle fibers, bacteria, spermatozoa and blood flow. Through his invention, he could analyze even the smallest composition, either a piece of cheese or eyes of an insect. During his research and study, he sent almost 560 letters to the Royal Society.

He is also known as ‘Father of Microbiology’. Antonie Van leeuwenhoek is considered the first micro-scopist and micro-biologist. He also contributed in establishing microbiology as a field of study in science.

Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek was born and brought up in Delft, Netherlands. He married twice and had one daughter named Maria from the first wife Barbara de Mey. Antonie Van leeuwenhoek invented first single cell microscope which can magnify human vision up to 300 times and was capable of analyzing a number of composition, even the smallest one like an insect’s eye. The microscope invented by Antoni Van leeuwenhoek helped in number of discoveries in the field of molecular biology, especially the discovery of sperm cell. It marked a revolutionary point in the field of planning pregnancy. It is believed that Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek created more than 500 optical lenses and invented almost 25 single-lens microscopes.

What led Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek for the first sperm cell discovery?

Can you believe, Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek discovered sperm cells just after he made out with his wife? As he was requested by the Royal Society in London to carry out his research on sperm cells, he was quite active unlike other males after the act. It is said that the moment he ejaculated inside his wife he was out of bed to grab his microscope and look out for any living bodies in the semen. He discovered that in the semen, there are some living animal like tiny bodies with blunt head and transparent tail. He even drew the images and presented it to the Royal Society of London. He wrote everything in a letter in 1677 and described his discovery as “de Natis e semine genital Animalculis,” and the sperms as “animalcules”.

Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek made number of discoveries through his microscope that helped him gain the reputed status of ‘First Microbiologist’. He discovered sperm cell; muscle fibres, bacteria and blood flow in the capillaries.
