    iPill - Find out Side effects, Uses, Risks, Precautions of the Birth Control Method

    i-Pill is the most popular oral contraceptive pills women use to prevent unwanted pregnancy. i Pill is also used for Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Heavy and Irregular periods, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Endometriosis, and reduce chances of ectopic pregnancy. iPill needs to be avoided in case if a woman smokes, or is suffering from cancer or heart related disorders.

    In India, i-pill is not an emergency contraceptive method anymore, rather it is a way to prevent any unwanted pregnancy and explore the 'sexual revolution' especially within teenagers and youth. Indian teenagers and youth started exploring the contours of sexuality to their best level since the emergence of pills in the market like Durex i-pill, Unwanted 72 without realizing about the side effects it has on girl's health.     About 65% of youngsters have unprotected sex and relies on these emergency i-pills. But they need to keep in mind that this i-pill or any emergency pill is not a contraceptive pill on which they can rely daily.

    But before starting to assume it as a miracle pill, one should know what the dangerous effects of these emergency contraceptive pills are. Every sexually active woman must know about the below facts and look for a better and safe option. (2)

    Side Effects of i-pill

    1- First, try to understand they are just contraceptive tablets, not an abortion pill. It can stop pregnancy but doesn't terminate it. So, i-pill is not effective if a woman is pregnant already. (5) (4)

    2- Immediately after unprotected sex, consume the pill. It should be taken within 24 to 72 hours. Afterward, the pill is useless. These pills are effective only when taken on time. (3)

    Birth control

    3- It doesn't give protection against any STDs or HIV/ AIDS.

    4- Consult before consuming any emergency contraceptive tablet if you are on long-term medication for any ailment.

    5- Breast tenderness, delayed or irregular menstruation, nausea, lower abdominal ache, vomiting, headache are some of the side effects.

    6- One must consult the doctor before taking contraceptive i-pill who is allergic to Levonorgestrel (contraceptive pills).

    7- These i-pills are used as an emergency contraceptive method. It should not be used regularly and is unhealthy if taken more than twice in a month.

    8- I-Pill is safe for the females within the age group of 25 and 45. It is not suitable for teenagers. Since the rate of teenage pregnancy is increasing in India, schools and colleges should start sex education campaign and educate the youth about the harmful side effects of i-pill.

    9- They are hormonal pills and its regular use can lead to severe menstrual problems or can even damage ovaries.

    10- According to the research of ISARC, these pills can reduce sexual interest, leads to skin allergies and prepone menstruation in some women. Some women complained about a relentless headache due to hormonal imbalance. 

    11- Vaginal discharge experiences discharge while taking i-pill. It can range from increase to decrease in vaginal lubrication, change in the discharge nature and affecting the sexual intercourse. Seek medical help if you find any alteration in vaginal discharge.

    12- Visual changes in contact lenses: Due to i-pill contraceptive pills, there are hormonal changes can occur and lead to fluid retention. This can affect the corneas to swell and change in shape. So, contact lenses may not fit comfortably if your corneas are swollen.

    The pill can also be consumed for non-contraceptive medical purposes for the following issues:

    1- Irregular periods (6)

    2- Regulation of menstrual periods (7)

    3- Menorrhagia (heavy periods)

    4- Dysmenorrhea (painful periods)

    9- Decreasing the chances of pregnancies in the fallopian tubes

    Risks and precautions involved while taking i-pill

    1- Combination pills are slightly risky when we talk about cardiovascular side effects like heart attack, blood clots, and stroke. Anyone with these issues history should avoid taking a combination of birth control pills and talk to a doctor for an alternative method. (10)

    2- Women above 35 years of age and above who also smokes must avoid taking these pills.

    3- Not recommended for a person with liver or heart disease, uterine or blood cancer, migraines with aura or uncontrolled blood pressure.
